Default Towing Capacity of a 98RS

Trying to plan for the winter and wondering if the my 98RS will tow my snowmobile around or if im going to have to buy a beater.

Anyone know the towing capacity and how much a trailer hitch kit would be as well as any other concerns I might consider?

-lou

Thanks

The towing capacity should be in your drivers manual. If I get the chance I'll take a peek at mine tonight. Figuring on about 600lbs for a sled, and then another 200 for a trailer, your car might tow it, but it sure wouldn't be happy.

If you can take a look it would be appreciated i doubt theres one in my glovebox. Its either the car not being happy or me buying a 500-800 truck that would never be happy My friends got a truck and trailer that we usually use when we go out but he now has a gf and is very much wipped so i dont know when he will be "able" to go out this year

The only thing I plan on towing with my 98 RS this winter is my friends tied to a very long rope attached to a snowtube through my back roads. I love doing that. I have fun doing that every summer.

Default You can tow things with an RS? ;)

I actually looked into this.. It's kinda a weird thing, under 750 lbs is fine. Over ~750 - 1000 lbs Subaru recommends a trailer have electric brakes. Maximum is 2000 lbs towing capacity. Maximum tongue weight on an RS is 150 lbs, Forester 200 lbs. All the documentation varies. Owners manual says one thing, Subaru website site says one thing, and the brochures say another. Go figure.

so 600 for a sled and 200 for a trailer = close to being ok.

My question is whats the purpose of toungue weight? please forgive my ignorance.

Also any idea how much it costs to fit my car to tow a trailer?

tongue weight is the amount of weight the trailer will put on the tongue of the trailer which is the piece of the trailer that makes contact to the ball which is attached to the hitch on your car. So, if the tongue weight is 150 lbs, it means that you essentially have a 150 lbs in your trunk... To set the tongue weight, you use this highly advanced method of a bathroom scale. You play with where the axle is situated from front to rear. Move axle to the rear, tongue weight goes up because there is more weight between axle and tongue. Move the other way and tongue weight goes down.

Ken's right. I'm seeing a bunch of different specifications. *Scratches head*... I'd be pretty wary towing close to 1000 pounds with my RS. Especially since when you add the trailer your wheelbase will almost double. I think you'd be ok if the roads were dry but I can't imagine trying to recover from a tailout slide on the highway at 55 mph in the wet. The weight behind you would be enough to throw our cars around quite a bit.
