Default Totally *stupid n00b* question about roof rack

I'm packing a ton of crap to go camping and could use a little extra room on the roof of the Tribeca. I don't want to have to take the WRX too...

So, I'm investigating throwing some stuff up on the roof rack w/crossbars. On my old Durango I could move the racks back and forth on the vehicle, but I don't see anything like this on the Tribeca. I inspected them and don't see any way to move them back and forth at all. The owner's manual was less than stellar, offering no input. A Google search didn't work either.

Are these non-movable or am I a moron?

Thanks!

They can't be adjusted to my knowledge. I installed mine and the only place you can set the bar is in the opening on the rail.

Not only they don't move Subaru wants to sell you an accessory so you can use the bars. Like a basket or plastic turtle. There are no rub strips or anything up there, not or mention any way to tie stuff down from the sides.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought.

Why would they put a roof rack on there that can't be moved?

Yakima makes the rack for Subaru. You could purchase the aftermarket Yakima set up and have *some* fore/aft adjustablility. It is also wider that the factory Yakima set up

I was all set to purchase the aftermarket version until I learned the rack's air dam would be smack in the center of the sunroof, rendering it useless. I remember how bad the wind noise was in my old Jetta with a roof rack in this position. The factory rack is fixed and starts behind the sunroof.

IMO, go factory if you need the roof rack. I left the store with a hitch rack for the bikes. I may still get the factory set up when the kids' toys get too bulky.

I also have a hitch mounted cargo tray left over from the Forester. It may be a good alternative to the roof rack.
