Question What's everyone using for brake fluid?

So I got powerstop pads on the way (I hope...the check to Primitive cleared last week!), but I also want to use better fluid. Paul sold me some Motul Dot 5 stuff, but a seasoned driving instructor I know says the stuff aint' worth it, especially if it is synthetic. He says I'd be better off with Blue dot, or something like that. Cheaper and more effective.

Soo..... what are you all using these days?

If it is actually DOT 5 then do not use it in your street car!!!! DOT 5 is a synthetic silicone based fluid. It doesn't mix with "regular" fluids (DOT 3, 4, 5.1), it is not hygroscopic (doesn't absorb water, so any fluid in your system will just stay as water, which means it will boil when you heat up the brakes), and if your system is not completely flushed prior to adding the DOT 5 stuff it will gum everything up.

At the last open track event I went to last fall I talked to a guy who hadn't been told all of the above. He added DOT 5 to his system, and it gummed everything up so bad he had to overhaul all 4 calipers and get a new master cylinder. Yikes!! DOT 5 is good for race cars, where the fluid will be swapped out so frequently that moisture in the system won't be a problem. For street cars, it's a no-no.

Now, if it is DOT 5.1, then you're fine. I'm not sure why the DOT didn't call DOT 5.1 "DOT 6", but they didn't. DOT 5.1 is synthetic brake fluid, but is completely compatible with DOT 3 and 4.

Anyway, for fluid recommendations, ATE Super Blue and Motul 600 are probably the way to go. I've got a Valvoline Synthetic fluid in my car now, but it hasn't been tested on the track yet. The dry and wet boiling points both look good (the wet in particular), so hopefully it holds up as well as the numbers would make it seem.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the heads up. His web site lists it as Motul 600 Dot 4, so I suppose this is in fact what I'm getting.

Super Blue is what my friend reccommended; said it was cheaper than Motul. Hopefully, I'll get this stuff in the next couple days...

The biggest bang for buck brake mod is SS brake lines, if you haven't already.
