Default South Jersey Cops to Target Crosswalk Violators

http://www.courierpostonline.com/art...325/-1/fptowns

Quote:
CHERRY HILL Motorists found out the hard way Thursday that the man in jeans and a gray short-sleeve shirt walking back and forth across Chapel Avenue was no regular pedestrian. It was undercover Cherry Hill police officer Ronald Harrison and he was targeting drivers who broke the state's crosswalk law by not yielding as he crossed the street.
Thursday's scene across from Cherry Hill High School West is set to play out across South Jersey in the upcoming weeks as part of a "Cops in the Crosswalks" initiative aimed at bringing attention to the state's deadly roadways. Motorists who don't yield are faced with a $100 fine, plus court costs and fees and two points on their driving record. Cherry Hill Police Chief Charlie Jones said the undercover operations will be carried out Monday to Sept. 13. Burlington City, Collingswood, Pennsauken and Rowan University police also are participating in the tri-county area.

yeah, 100$ fine and 2 points is not fun stuff.

personally i think people should be more careful when they cross, not just the drivers but no one uses common sense anymore. it's a lot easier to stop a 150lb person going 2mph than a 3500lb car going 10-15+.

I wish they would do this too. I read in the paper that they do it occasionally in Atlantic City by the walk/the pier because people are constantly getting hit by cars there.

I had someone try and run in front of my car in the middle of the block(not in a crosswalk) in Sea Isle about 15 minutes ago.
He screamed "YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS"...and I yelled back, "ONLY WHEN YOU'RE IN A CROSSWALK, *******!"

It pisses me off that they're doing this. It makes pedestrians feel entitled to walk in front of cars. I'm sorry but if you step in front of my car 15 feet away, I doubt I'll be able to stop in time.
People don't use common sense.

Especially down at these shore towns near where I live. They allow parking 25 feet from the corner, and if it's a big SUV parked there, chances are you can't even see the person until your at the crosswalk.
It ought to be interesting to see what happens when the first cop gets hit by a car.

When the first cop gets creamed this program will stop. They started doing it in North Jersey awhile back.

Either that or they'll want the program to be operated even more and on a larger scale because a "pedestrian" got hit.
This is like using the cops as crash dummies.

i'm a cop on lbi and for the amazing amount of times i have almost seen someone get hit, it's usually the pedestrian crossing who is at fault. Crossing against the signal or riding their bike in the lane of traffic or wrong direction. just about a week ago a girl was crossing rt 72 in manahawkin and was on the phone fighting with her bf, crossed against the signal and got hit by 2 seperate cars at about 60mph, she died.

the only time i'm in a rush is at the track. slow down and leave the road rage at home. let that a hole in front of you from the right turn only lane. he knows he's an a hole and you'll get there eventually. you really wanna get your car dented up or catcha bullet over some a hole? you never know whos got a gun on their lap.
hitting someone with a car, even if it is their fault, can get messy in your membrane especially if you kill somebody. how people go on living after murdering someone must be tough. how can you go on driving with blood on your bumper and your hands?

I can't stand the A-HOles that will deliberately walk out in front of moving traffic and purposely mosey on across the road at a defiantly slow snails pace

I dont know about "lbi" but its legal to ride IN the lane of traffic in NY...

It does however piss me off to no end, when I have to ride my bike around idiots who are riding against traffic and endanger my life by forcing me closer to 40mph cars that dont leave enough room.

This is not entrapment.

Also, as a driver, you should be suspecting everything and paying attention.

Yeah true but when a car hits a pedestrian even though the driver isn't at fault, charges can still be brought against them for manslaughter right?

yeah it's legal here, you can't ride on the sidewalk bc you would be running into walking pedestrians. BUT, you have to ride with the flow of traffic. Our biggest problem on the other hand is stolen bikes, bc of all the drunks leaving the bars haha
