Question Alpine 9856 vs 9857, is the 9857 worth the extra $$$

I'm planning on uprgrading to either the Alpine 9856 or 9857. The reason for the upgrade is so I can connect to my Ipod. From what I've seen the main difference seems to be the display, is that worth the extra cash? Thanks.

2 big lines & 2 small lines ftw. I waited an extra 2 months just for the 9857 if that means anything to you.

Thanks, what I was looking for was justification for spending the extra cash when the wife sees the bill.

I have the 9856 and it works just fine. Certainly not as cool or easy to read as the 9857, but I was able to use the cash I saved on a set of JL Audio component speakers that woke up the stereo. Man are the stock speakers nasty.....

FWIW, I use both XM and my ipod with mine, and love the capabilities!

Just depends on what you want. It's really hard to justifly this kinda purchase to a woman. The display really rocks...combined with alpines high speed interface... You could say that with the clearer/larger display you will be able to navigate your ipod more precisely lower your chance of an accident.

Thanks for the input, I went with the 9857. I ordered it from crutchfield, it comes with the Ipod cable, the 9856 didn't, so it made them a little closer in price. I'd read a few post where people were saying the the display on the 9857 made navigating the Ipod easier. Now comes the fun part, explaining myself to my CFO

I've owned my fair share of HUs and I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with the 9857. The display is amazing, the sound is impressive, but I think the most compelling feature is the navigation of both Ipods and .mp3 cds. I've never experienced a deck that was easier to sort through tons of music.

Excellent choice - you won't be disappointed.

blluetooth is an expensive option. not included with 9857 or 9856.
the screen is obviously much nicer on the 9857.
another feature that is on the 9857 but omitted from the 9856, is the quick ipod scanning. both have the high speed interface, but the 9857, you can use the 6 radio preset buttons to scan through your artists. preset 6 would take you to the end of your artist list. 5 would take you to about "s", 4 would take you to about "M" etc... makes getting through long artist lists easier and i dont know why they omitted this from the 9856. well, i do know why, because they want you to buy the 9857.

Seems like I went against the grain in selecting the 9856. I knew that I wouldn't be fumbling with the controls much while driving, and once I locked in a playlist, I would just let it play on continuous loop. In retrospect, for my intents and purposes, I didn't need to spend the extra money, and probably wouldn't need the extra features. All depends on how you intend to use the system.

Any of you guys running an amp with these head units, or just swapping them straight up for the factory head unit?

How is the sound without an amp and with the stock speakers? Worse/better, quieter/louder than a stock setup?

I went with the 9857... absolutely zero regrets. The display is amazing, and the navigation with the 1-6 buttons is completely worth it.

I was originally thinking I should have saved a few bucks and gone with the 9856 but now I'm feeling better about my decision. I'm a sucker for more features anyhow. Thanks.

I cant speak for the other unit but i just purchased a 57 about two weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. This is my third alpine and as always they are great units. This one has a lot of sound flexability and matched with my Boston Accoustic speakers I'm very happy with the way it sounds, even when listening to MP3s.

When my wife first saw the head unit her first comment was how easy it was to read the display. I wish I had this unit in my convertable thats for sure.

Ipod navigation is very easy and extreamly quick. A very good unit, great if you have a portable music player.

Also as I recall you can make this unit work with standard USB portable music players - aka non-ipods? I thought I read that somehwere before but didnt dig very far into it.

I can sorta speak for the 9857 because i have a 9855 (2005 model) which features the biolite display.

Of course the biolite isn't NECESSARY, but yeah, it's pretty awesome. It really glows at night. So show it to your wife at NIGHT when she first sees it.

I just got the 9857. There are times when I wish it had more display room, so I think the 9856 would easily be twice as bad.

I went with the 9856, primarily because I'm not planning on getting an Ipod. I figured the fancy display would be cool at first, but that would probably wear off fast and in the end I'd rather have the $150 in my pocket. I do use the unit for satellite however, and to tell you the truth there are better options out there if you're not using an ipod.

The main thing that pisses me off with satellite and Alpines is they limit the display scroll to only 16 characters, most other head units don't do that. If I were to do it again, I'd probably go for a JVC, Kenwood, or Pioneer because they offer a better display in this price range. I'll be sticking with the stock speakers for a while, so I'm sure they're all very similar in the sound quality department when using those. My 2 cents.

bluetooth allows u to connect such thing IE your phone to other deviced like headsets, speakers, laptops and computers wirelessly. Sorta like infared connection but better. WIth BT (if ur phone is capable) u can connect ur phone to the Alpine HU and use ur speakers to have a convo

My boss reviewed the 9857 and thee 9856. After some consideration he decided to get the 9856. After seeing his 9856 and loving it, I bought the 9857. The main reason I bought the 9857 was for the display. We have both had our head units for about 6 months and his big complaint is having to scroll thru the list of artists using the dial. He has a couple hundred artists and it takes him a over a min to the middle of the list. No matter how fast you turn the dial it will only go down 3 or 4 artists at a time. He hates it when he is driving. To get around the problem he has gotten very good at managing his play lists. The 9857 has the quick search buttons with allow you to jump down the list. I don't have any problems quickly finding what I want to play. He has looked into selling his HU and buying the 9857 for this feature.

Hope this helps you decide.

^^ I've had an older Alpine for a while now that has a similar display to the 56, as well as that annoying scrolling "feature". This was perhaps the strongest driving force behind me getting the 57 - display and iPod scrolling. I almost never listen to the radio or a CD, so iPod features were high on my list.
