I think my record of providing empirical evidence and analysis to the community over the last 5 years stands for itself at this point.

Then contribute to the thread and make it better instead of being a dick about it. Keep the thread up to date with your contributions. Noone said you haven't made them. Just don't keep them to yourself if you're gonna say they should be in this thread or the thread is outdated. It's really pretty simple. If you don't get that then maybe you aren't the guy I thought you were...

I'm well into doing my own budget n/a build on my green and gold 2000 obs.
Found a SOHC 2.5 out of a legacy wagon in a local yard for $300 and jumped in with both feet.
Did my research, used this thread as a major source of reference.
This is what I have in the works;
stage 2 port and polish
1500 cam regrind-both provided by delta cams

phenolic spacers
ported/balanced intake
ported throttle body-provided by Grimmspeed

equal length obx stainless header
high flow catalytic converter, 2.25 midpipe
stromung muffler

weapon r intake

lightened flywheel/clutch combo

crawford reflash

I've already done;
agx struts/eibach lowering springs (subtle rear end saggy spacers)
obx short shifter and kartboy shifter bushings
wrx wheels and front brakes
whiteline end links front and rear-rear wrx swaybar- front wrx swaybar going on when i do exhaust
group n motor/trans mounts
ebay top front and rear strut bars
leather interior out of a legacy outback wagon
belltronics 955 power cord hardwire

looking to complete swap in the next 2 weeks.
waiting for heads and intake to come back and a few parts to arrive.
will re-assemble/time motor, then put into car.
Doing the transmission quill rework whilst motor is out of car

do yourself a huge favor and spend an extra $400 on the TWE headers. with a build like that, heads off and away for a while its the best time to spend a cpl hundred more and get some higher compression pistons and use the better headers to make double the power.

Delta should have a set of heads on the shelf already done.......unless they sold em since the last time I spoke to them.

Have fun,

How much of this changes with the 09 impreza? Does most still apply or would I have new challenges with this generation?

I've been delayed a bit waiting for the heads to come back from Delta, they're on their way back to me now, ETA this Friday.
Thanks for all the responses, I've read a lot on this site and I'm damn grateful that you guys have spent the time figuring all this out and spending the time to set it all down here for others to use.
I read the 'na whitepaper' and did a lot of reading otherwise figuring out what I could do with my budget.
I figured I would do the cams/heads/intake/headers/em thing, I have help to get all that done.
The idea of doing high compression pistons/rings/bearings/crankshaft keeps running through my head. If I could've afforded it, I woulda prbly done it. I've been accused of going to 11 a few times in my life, lol.
I'm also planning to paint the car and do a 98-01 rs bumper skin/side skirts/spats. Once I finish that I'll prbly start plotting and planning to find a 2.5 block and build it or buy a used turbo block.
I'm feeling like a little kid who knows he's getting a kick ass bike for xmas and is counting down the days.
I should be building this car this coming weekend. I've already done most of the preparation.
From everything I've read and heard, this should be a respectably fast car.
I'm stoked.
Thanks again for all the info, I'll post again and maybe even include some pics.

Please do. Often times someone will follow the advice and not report back on the results.

It will be a fun car to drive, that much I promise!

Default Imput please, Thnx

Ok I just read through this entire thread. Great info
But the reason I was reading was to get more info on frankenmotor which I didnt see much but did get great info on 2.5 N/A itself

My plans for now on my 95 Imp L, exempt from OBDII emissions

My dualport ej22 heads
Delta HP cams
Got a ej25d block lined up
Find a IM that will use topfeed and work on my setup so I can use the 565cc inj
Borla UEL headers that I have
Walbo FP
Use a 96 ecu to accept OpenSource tuning to run E85
LWCP, ground kit, MSD coil from Dodge neon, rallitek wires 00-04
ARP headstuds and Blue gates timing belt.
What do you guys thing I will be making? Any ideas or imputs too. This motor is only untill I do my secrete motor swap, then I will sell the whole set to help fund swap and no its not turbo been there done that, It will be something new.
Most of the stuff I already have thats why Im doing this plus 200k on motor kinda tired lol
Any suggs on IM like year I can go with. Non egr better.
If I cant get the 96ecu to work I will have to go StandAlone as my 95ecu is non tuneable
I will get the ViPec V44 cuz its what Im goin to use on my swap but Id rather not have to put up the 1500 rite now

The work done is:
04 sti susp no saggy but prob for me
04 sti R&P with whiteline bushings
04 sti rear sway
22B R180 4.444 rearend W/LSD with whiteline bushings(had a r160 frm FXT but it blow IDKY)
WRX brakes up front W/dippled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads, W/ SS lines all around
JDM TT Legy 4EAT 4.444 Tranny, soon to have shift paddles and center diff lock
Enkei RSV lightweight wheels with goodyear eagle gt 225/45/17
RS hood, wing

List to come:
JDM STI front strut bar, finish rear strut bar
All new poly bushing all the way around
Endlinks, lateral links,
RS bumper installed as soon as I get JDM LW beams
HID 8K heads & 3K fogs
Complete interior swap, gotta get rid of this damn ugly tan bs
More to come.

Thanks everyone ahead of time for help and imput

Figured I'd post a quick update to my build, as Jerry used to say, what a long strange trip its been....
Had bad block from junkyard motor that I purchased.
Also had recurring auto trans CEL.
As well as a bad loping idle.
Spent $100 on a used block, had to trade my old smoking crappy block as well, good riddance!
Spent about $240 on machine work on 'new' block; cylinder hone, checked and polished crank, clean and some other diagnostic stuff.
Built block with stock rings and acl coated main and rod bearings.
Have about 200 miles on new block, no smoke, no leakage of fluids, feels very STRONG.
I've made a committment to not exceed 4000 rpm for at least 500 miles with this new setup.
The plan is to drive it like a granny for 500 miles, drain oil and inspect it for metal bits, etc. We also plan to adjust valves at this stage if everything looks good.
We set them up on the loose side when we initially put the motor together. The smoking stuttering block had about 500 miles put on it, so the heads will have about a 1000 miles on them.
Overall its been a long tuf haul, but at the end of it, its worth it. The car feels great, even under 4k rpm. I've learned a lot, made some good friends and the car is beast.
On the horizon; blitz black on the bottom, stock green on the top, rs bumper, etc.
Its been fun and I'm not finished.

Sounds like a good project to me. And by the way i have a Link G4storm ecu, brand new in box, and 600cc sidefeed injectors that i may let go for a very, very reasonable price.

PM me if you are ready to sell with your offer. I May use stand alone system sometime this fall if the price is right. Would save me a lot of time and work around on the stock system.

I am currently rebuilding my ej251 and decided not to go the turbo route. I am doing many of the above mods including pnp, stage 2 cams, springs, titanium retainers, and .25 oversized pistons. Hopefully I can get some good numbers out of it.
