Default Small multiplayer shooter game? help please

Me and my son (age 8) enjoy playing each other over the network but I can't seem to find a nice, small, fun game that my second (crappy for gaming) laptop can handle. We enjoy http://www.flyordie.com/tanx/index.html but the drawbacks are too many other players and it hangs up pretty bad quite often. I'd like something I could download and play over my own network.
TIA OT

Why not use a gaming console? Are you and your son not living in the same house?

As far as games, there is the older versions of MechWarrior which were fun. If I were you, I would walk into a computer software store or something like EB Games, Software, Etc. - and ask them what they would suggest.

Cube is a good FPS, its free and multiplayer and despite decent 3D graphics it doesn't require much power to play. my laptop with crappy s3 integrated graphics plays it good enough.

Mark, Cube orCube2? That looks pretty good. As for the console idea we both enjoy using the laptops and no, he doesn't live with me.

i haven't tried cube2 yet, but it looks cool- if it's based on the same engine it should also play well on slower computers. cube1 definately does.

believe it or not it's gotten a lot better... the early revisions of cube didn't even have an installer. you downloaded a zip file, extracted it, edited a config file manually, then ran the executable.

then again not having to install it wasn't always a bad thing
