Default Jaguar to debut "Supercharged" XKR @ 2006 British Motor Show

Jaguar to debut "Supercharged" XKR @ 2006 British Motor Show

Press Release:
Quote:
JAGUAR SUPPORTS HOME SHOW WITH GLOBAL DEBUT OF SUPERCHARGED XKR

Jaguar's new supercharged sports car will make its global debut here in the UK at the British International Motor Show, to be held at the ExCeL Centre in London’s Docklands.

The XKR will be unveiled at a press conference on the Jaguar stand on Tuesday 18 July.

"We are thrilled that the XKR will make its global debut at Jaguar's home show," commented Jaguar's UK Managing Director Geoff Cousins.

"Following the resounding success of the XK since it went on sale earlier this year, we are confident that the much awaited XKR will continue to build on the momentum the car has generated for our dealers."

As with all Jaguars, the new XK is designed, engineered and developed at the company's Whitley Product Development Centre in Coventry. There, some of the most advanced facilities in the car industry – including computer-aided design, advanced engineering, vehicle component development, safety test centres and engine testing – are used to create world-class cars such as the X-TYPE, S-TYPE, XJ and of course XK.

The new XKR sports car will be produced at the company's state of the art Castle Bromwich manufacturing centre in Birmingham. In addition to being the assembly plant for three of Jaguar's four models, this is also where the aluminium bodies and structures for the XJ and XK are constructed.

If you are attending the London show, the Jaguar UK team will be pleased to welcome you on Stand S20 in the South Hall at ExCeL to view the sensational new all-aluminium XKR.

Further information including images, specification and pricing will be available nearer the official launch.

Hopefully it will be a 4.5 liter or something in addition to the supercharger. I haven't seen anything else about hp.

I can think of sooo many better ways to spend a hundred grand - even if I were to spend it on a car...

I thought the old ones looked great at the time, but much prefer the new ones. The rear overhang is way too long on the old ones.

NO! I never liked the old ones - and yes, I realize that I was in the minority on that.

While I liked the old one, I think the new one is vastly better in a number of ways. The old XK8 was largely based on the old XJS of 1976. Back then manufacturers were worried about the Feds outlawing convertibles so for the first several years there were no XJS convertibles. The Aston Martin DB7 shared this platform. The new one was designed and styled first as a convertible and then as a coupe, and I think its one of the first ever (along with the DB9) British convertibles to have a top that folds completely out of sight. Regardless the new XK benefits from a completely modern package that should make it a great car.

Saw a XK being testing in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago. Got all this equipment stuck to the rear wheel. It was one awsome looking car. IMO, no longer plain and understated like the old ones. What got my attention initially was the curve of the rear fenders when sighting down the length of the car, now that's a sports car.

IRVINE, Calif., June 30 -- Jaguar is proud to announce its new supercharged sports cars -- the 2007 Jaguar XKR Coupe and Convertible. Making its global debut at the 2006 London Motor Show on July 18, 2006, the all-new XKR takes the Jaguar experience to new heights.

Designed in parallel with the naturally aspirated 2007 XK Coupe and Convertible, the new supercharged XKR makes intelligent use of practical, modern technology such as its industry-leading aluminum monocoque body structure. In fact, the new XKRs' aluminum chassis are significantly lighter and stiffer in both Coupe and Convertible form than the steel counterparts they replace.

A 420bhp, 4.2-liter supercharged V8 engine makes the Jaguar XKR capable of rapid 0-60 mph performance in just 4.9 seconds (XKR Coupe) and produces an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Both XKR Coupe and Convertible exhibit enhanced performance styling cues such as a sportier new grille and front bumper design, a vented hood and distinctive aluminum-effect side power vents. Its unique option 19- or 20-inch alloy wheel designs and standard quad-exhaust system also add to its overall presence.

"The new supercharged XKR captures perfectly the essence of what makes a Jaguar XK so special," commented Bibie Boerio, Jaguar Cars managing director. "It is a perfect combination of refined Grand Tourer and serious performance sports car that delivers a truly rewarding and exhilarating driving experience."

Building on the excellence of the 2007 XKs introduced in 2005, the 2007 XKR is the epitome of a contemporary sports car and perfectly illustrates Jaguar's philosophy of building beautiful, fast cars. It combines beauty with power, and style with dynamism to deliver a world-class performance automobile.

All-new 2007 Jaguar XKR At-A-Glance Highlights

* New supercharged Jaguar XK sports car - the XKR, available as a Coupe or Convertible

* All the attractions and attributes of the XK, but amplified in the 'R' to complement the extra power and performance

* 4.2-liter, supercharged V8 engine developing 420bhp and 413 lb.-ft. (560Nm) of torque

* 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.9 seconds and 155 mph (electronically limited) top speed

* All-aluminum construction means a lighter, stiffer vehicle, which improves handling and agility.

* Uprated springs and dampers, and recalibrated Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) system for enhanced ride and handling

* Class-leading six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel- mounted shift paddles for ultra-quick gear shifts in milliseconds

* Active Exhaust System to ensure cruising speed refinement, but purposeful V8 roar under hard acceleration

* Subtle XKR exterior styling enhancements include a sportier grille and front bumper design, vented hood, unique aluminum-effect side power vents and new wheel designs

* Enhanced interior includes unique aluminum 'weave' design on the fascia (polished burl walnut is optional at no extra cost) and XKR sports seats

* Intuitive controls and driver-focused technologies are available -- including Keyless Entry, Keyless Start, advanced Touchscreen and Active Front Lighting

I like the old ones, I'm looking at buying one right now. Although I need a backseat so it will be either a XJR or a Vanden Plas. I want a 2004 XJR but I may end up getting a 98 or 99, XJR or VDP. Oh and the performance are non clutch dropping real repeatable numbers. They are all automatics after all, atleast in North America.

I came into the Subaru from a 86 XJS with a 5 speed. I guess the transmission wasn't exactly factory.

One of my friends recently bought his wife an 02 XJR and it is probably one of the the nicest cars I have driven. Grace, space, and pace. He does say all the gizmos on it have him waking up in a cold sweat at night.

Jaguar is going GT3 racing with the XKR in 2007. I've also heard that they will be doing a lightweight street car version of the race car like Porsche does with so many of their own cars.

Quote:
Apex Motorsport is set to run at least six new Jaguar XKR Coupes in the FIA's '07 GT3 European Championship. The same people who brought us the Le Mans-winning Bentley back in 2003, Apex has taken on a new partner and been reformed for this venture. Should be refreshing to see this legendary name return to racing, especially in something that mimics the road cars so closely.

The Jags will join showroom rivals such as Aston Martin and Maserati on the tracks of Europe next year without official factory support but with Jaguar's blessing. The process of turning these new aluminum-bodied, supercharged Jags into race cars will start immediately at Apex's Buckingham, England shop. They are expected to be ready for the first race next season.

I'm still looking for a red one or should I say waiting for a red one. I did see one, but it was sold before I arrived at the dealership, 2001 XJR.

What I really need is a 2001+ Vanden Plas Supercharged or Super V8, although a 2004+ XJR would do.

BTW the New Jaguar World Magazine, has a review of the new XKR.
