Default How Many Shades of Black Are There?

So what is the difference between OBP, JBP and just about any other shade out there? Is there like, pics for comparison?

Oh, you'd be surprised! Looking at pics won't tell you much. But take your black car to a paint shop sometime. There are dozens - maybe hundreds- of different shades of black. Try to match what you have with the wrong one and you will quickly see that black is not just black. I had one painter-dude tell me that black is one of the hardest colors to match perfectly!

OBP are you refering to the color black that the impreza has obsiden black pearl

I believe that there aren't really any difference its just the name a company gives to the color, I only really see differences in custom paints

Just from visual observation, and certainly not a technical observation or description, but I think that the OBP has blue colored flecking in the paint and JBP has gold colored flecking in the paint. Assuming you are just talking about Subaru paint colors, not sure how many shades there might be.

Black is almost the hardest paint to do

with black you have to go to some one good or else you will get problems and you would almost be better off repainting the entire car than just blending in one area

Yeah, on a nice (rare) sunny day I think I even see some green flake, as well as gold, in my JBP.

My 98 RS has OBP. I would describe the flake as purple, not blue.

Oops, my bad. I think they ^^ are right. The blue flecks were in my 2002 bugeye WRX, which would mean it was called (MBP) midnight black pearl, not the (OBP) as I erroneously said. The gold flecks are definitely in the 2004, which is the (JBP) java black pearl?

if you put those three blacks next to each other, is it possible to tell the difference under daylight?

98 RSs are DBP.

It depends how clean the cars are. If they're all polished and sitting in direct sunlight, the difference is obvious. Dirty blacks all look alike.

+1 for MBP having blue flakes - a lot of blue flakes. So many that last summer I was approached and asked of my car color blue or black. It was a bright sunny day, and the car was clean, and actually appeared as a super-dark blue. I said the factory color name was Midnight Black Pearl, but today it appears to be more Midinight Blue Pearl. I like a car color that appears a little different depending on what sort of light it is in. I also like Subaru's varition on the blacks with the different metal flakes colors. i knew JBP had gold in it, but I had no idea about OBP (purple?) and DBP (red). I want one car in each color!

Yes, when the car is clean I get lots of compliments and questions about the paint. Same for when I had the 2002. Also, when I had the 2002 WRX with the blue flecks, I had Morrette(sp?) headlights put on. The guys at the shop who installed and painted them for me took the paint code directly off the door, but it was obvious the painted Morrettes did not have the same flecking in them. I was never really sure if it was because they got the wrong paint despite using the code or if there was some other problem.

^^^ Same.

When I first got my 02, I didn't like the MBP, but as time went on, the color grew on me and I love it now. MBP will really play tricks on you, watch out
