Default WRX trunk & wing--STU legal?

After reading the SCCA SoloII rules I can't make out if this rule means a WRX wing with 3rd brake light is a suitable replacement for an STi trunk with wing and third brake light. Anyone want to shed light on their thoughts? I'm mainly looking for weight reduction.

Ideally, I'd go with an RS trunk and no spoiler and install the RS 3rd brake light, but correct me if I'm wrong, that doesn't comply with STU rules...correct?

Standard parts may not be
removed except for the substitution of spoilers, rear wings,
bumper covers and valances. Rear wings must attach only aft of
the rear wheel centerline. Total surface area of all spoilers, splitters
and rear wing may not exceed 8 square feet as seen from
above (see 12.9). Substitution of rear spoilers or wings must
retain any original third brake light functionality unless otherwise
equipped.

you've got it right. you can swap to the WRX wing but you can't go wingless.

So wingless is reserved for BSP then, correct?

In STU, specifically for the STi, you can not go to a spoiler either, it must be a wing with a third brake light in the wing similiar to factory. This was told to me by someone who is extremely familiar with this ruleset and has given this particuliar issue much thought. He has also survived a protest on the very subject.

In light of that, yes, the WRX wing is perfectly legal in STU.

So using that same logic, the STi wing would be legal on a WRX in STU?

In BSP the STI has to run the OE wing as the WRX is in ESP so they can not share parts. The only change will come when/if the special edition STI goes on the same line with the regular STI then they could share parts in BSP.

So, if you put a piece of tape labeled "wing" with an led connected to the brakes on a bare trunk, it would pass the rule.

I assume you would have to retain the STi trunk springs though correct? Can anyone say how bad of a "catapult effect" you get?

I doubt I'd ever be that desperate, but I suppose that should be "legal."

Don't worry Mr. 'No Wing'! I'll be keeping my factory WRX spoiler as I want to complete a full season on r-comps in D-Stock next year. Then I plan on deciding whether I want to get coilovers & street tires and move to STU or stay in D-Stock.

I'll put it this way: Don't use the remote release unless you have someone back there holding the lid down... or unless you actually are trying to hurl a projectile over the car.

It just went on the same line as the regular STi, so it looks like people can get rid of the STi wing in favor of the limited wing.

This would only be legal in BSP though, right? I'm really looking for a STU option here besides keeping the wing and/or ghetto-rigging up a "legal" wing.

Anyone know if the trunk itself is the same part number between the WRX and the STi? I just noticed that this thread mentioned switching the trunk too.

Correct... only in BSP. The only way to run the limited trunk in STU is if you owned an '07 STi, and converted everything on it to the same stuff that's in the limited.

Thanks KC. Perhaps BSP might be the next playground in a couple years when the weight of the STI trunk and wing would really matter.

I think if you add a brake light on the limited spoiler, it would be legal for STU.

No, it wouldn't be. Because you can't replace a wing with a spoiler.

So the SCCA actually defines wing vs. spoiler?

Posted this in another thread...

A wing allows air to go over and under its surface.
A spoiler allows air to pass over (ie: trunk mounted) or under (bumper under-spoiler) the portions that are not affixed to the car. But not both at the same time.

SCCA doesn't need to define it.

Look at this pic...
It's a spoiler on a wing (the part that is up). Notice that air cannot go under the spoiler itself from the top surface of the wing:

Here's the proper usage of the term 'spoiler':

If the trunk part numbers are different (likely) you could not swap out the whole trunk lid.

Pretty sure they are different part numbers based on the number of pre-drilled holes they come with. Considering you would have to fill holes anyway, or make new ones depending which way you were going, that is splitting some pretty fine hairs.
