Wink Please don’t ban me…it’s just a question

Please don’t ban me…it’s just a question

Ok so my question is….why is there not a “grey” market for Cobb AP usable maps? I mean you can back them up right? And in theory one could lend a backup to another free of charge. Now obviously you would have to make sure the person you borrowed the map from had the same mods as you…but as long as it’s an off the shelf map (or even a somewhat conservative pro tune) it should be fine for multiple vehicles….right?
I am sure some are cringing while reading this…but I am just curious.

Thanks

ha!........aha ha...come on now....

I am obviously referring to non cobb maps (that can be used on the Cobb)
Like a PDX map for a 06 wrx with an intake and a STI top mount or some map a pro tuner made for a 2005 STI with a full TBE and a VF-22…etc etc

PS> I am well aware that all the extra $$$ that a pro-tune costs is to get a car-specific tune....so this is more for the PDX (kind-of-custom map)..

But even if you wouldn’t...I am sure there are a ton of people out there that would throw on a map custom made for someone else’s car (I can foresee a lot of blown engines)

My question is why is this not happening? Can you not backup a pro tune map? Do they somehow code it with you AP? I have to assume that this can all be circumvented...maybe the scoob community just is more ethical than I

They code it to your AP serial number. It can't be used on another AP, you could back it up to your computer and send it to other people. But it wouldn't work.

Only way I think it could be circumvented is if you had protuner software, which is $$$$, and cobb just doesn't give it out to anyone.

That makes sense.

I guess i just come from communities that like to “play” with that kind of stuff. Circumventing dvd inscription, bypassing game system securities…etc….
I can guarantee that the AP would be A LOT easier to crack then something like an XBOX…I guess there just not the demand/want etc

Good to know thanks

Just get ST and you share, borrow and use any other ST map (for sme model and year of course) you want. Unfortunalty i have not found a place where where these maps are collected. However, word is that they are redoing the forums on Cobb's site to allow a place for everyone to put these maps.

=\ you people dont seem to read any other threads in the Enginemangement section do you.....Read....And think... someone has already outlined exactly how to do this which I dont recomend, the Ap is a great product and if you want to "set it and forget it" then buy it. Best bang for the buck. Alot of R&D went into these maps and I believe you should spend the money if you decide to use there product. But regardless to answer the original posters question, yes you can, not just cobb, hell anybody, ecutek, pdx, doesnt matter. Ill put it like this, say you have a cd right? You want to send it to your friend whom lives in another state. So what do you do? you take your cd, rip the songs, compress them(mp3) then send the compressed files to him. Then your friend takes the songs, uncompresses them, burns them to a cd then boom he know has "your" cd. But that cd he has can work in a sony, panasonic, samsung yah now any cd player that supports that format. Its not like that with are "maps". What you use to "read", and "compress" the actually songs, has to be used on the other end. So... if you use a Sony Cd reader to rip the songs, then your friend needs to have the exact same Sony Cd reader/burner to burn the songs..... If you understand any of that youll figure out how to do it.

I'm sure somewhere, someone is sitting in their basement working on it right now... Look at the Gameboy Advance... (I wonder how Nintendo feels about that)
