Lightbulb Qs about HID and Morettes (and looks)

Someone's pic (BRP RS)
I'm just too lazy...

My Morettes are due tomorrow (or Wednesday), and I have been thinking of HID for quite some time. I just don't want to wait for long time to get my HID on Z1's groupbuy, and I want to get comfortable with the Morettes before deciding whether or not I need to source a set of HID (preferrably 6300K, obtainable locally). First things first, does the Morettes look better painted on a BRP GC8 RS, or should I leave it in black ABS? Couldn't find a pic but if painted BRP looks better, I might do the side skirt as well.

2nd, don't know how much experience you have with GC8 headlights, but if I ever go HID, I have 2 options - hack the HID off, or leave my light switch on all the time. Any better ideas?

As for lighting mod being illegal, that concerns me because I do want HID (stock headlight sucks). I heard that E-code bulbs (European standard) legal here, and Morettes function better with E-code bulbs. Where can I get those?

Thanks in advance

impatiently waiting for the lights to arrive.

Default Hmm, dunno...

Black on blue looks pretty mean - go for that "racoon" look.

Painted does look cleaner though. Perhaps if anybody else wants something painted (i.e. wing, skirt, spats, bumper) you could split the costs.

Where you getting your Morettes from?

Got them from the Z1 group back that had a mid-august time frame and turned into a mid-october time frame. Group buys will always be group buys, but I'm just glad that my item is on its merry way. Came to around $500 shipped.

$500 usd or cad? Cause if it's cad I'm going to be kicking myself for not getting in on it!

Are the twin Morettes supposed to be brighter overall than stock? If the low beam and high beam are significantly brighter than stock, and you want to sell, I may be interested. Being on the highway with no driving lights sucks

As for looks, it looks fine black on any color blue.

Question

You lost your stock headlight or what?

I have heard the Morettes have better lens, but it's not a projector (ie BMW) or reflector style (like our stock headlight), and it's better with E-code bulb (vs US DOT), which has a better light spread pattern. Possibly want to go a little higher power (not over 80~85W, and I think stock are 55/65)

I have yet to see a picture of a BRP GC8 with Morettes painted. Maybe I do have to take a look first at the real thing when they arrive.

Lightbulb My hypothesis on Ken's post....

Ken has/had a HUGE hole in one of his headlights due to a stone hitting it while travelling on the highway. He's got it plugged up with some silicone. Obviously it looks ugly, but at least it doesn't let water in. So that's why he's wondering if you're ever going to sell your Morettes.

chris, you mean e-code lens, not bulbs right? most bulbs are the same

the e-code conversion on my friend's audi made a big difference even before he got xenons. granted, they were projectors, so i don't know how much difference the morretts will make.

i think the flat black looks better

Sunny, where did your friend get the E-Code lights? I'd like to do this conversion myself.

'98 was the last year of E-Code headlights standard on the Impreza. Everything newer is DOT-only crap. Our cars are becoming more "Americanized" with each passing year...

Penphoe: I'm sure Necromancer is not confused, but you're
-S-: you might be right about E-code lens not E-code bulbs - maybe that's why nobody knows where to get those. US DOT sucks, and lucky we can use E-code lens no problem (not so with our fellow Americans, I think down south it has to be US DOT w/no exceptions). My Morettes don't have projector lens (old style) - the new style (with metal body and projector lens) cost a lot more.

My lights left Calgary this morning, so hopefully there will be someone at home picking it up for me tomorrow.

3 for unpainted..painted looks really akward...if you look at pics with them painted...it looks funny cuz you got the white surrounding the round headlights but then you got this big lens (corners) that is so large right beside the paited morrettes..I thinki it looks funny in pics...looks nicer black

Talking Lights arrived and on...

After a 2 hour battle with my headlights (with 45 minutes spent on the corner and headlight plug), the Morettes are on unpainted (yeah, like I can get them painted that fast). Looks a lot brighter to me (or is it the money spent that makes me see them that way? ). Haven't adjusted them yet, but they look down right mean - the RS actually looks like a VW with the grill off.

I will check out the improvement I get with E-code lens over US DOT. One bad thing I found out - the body shop didn't pull the frame 100%, and my left corner light can't be tied down with a screw (left it that way for now). It's past one year since I took my car out of the shop, any way that I can get that estimated and done up? (The only reason I left it was I don't want to drive another courtesy car for 2-3 weeks - I had enough of it) Hopefully the corner won't flap too much without the screw tying it down.

Am I the only one with Morettes on GC8 now in Lower Mainland?

You be pimpin'!

Go for a leisure drive up Seymour Mt. to test them out. Take someone with you and compare the difference.

Default Seymour Run -- Lemme know!

I'll be your baseline since I have NOT changed any of my lights - except for my fogs.

First off - I forgot to adjust it while installing it, and I paid dearly - I ended up ripping the lights out again and adjusting them (turns out to be an hour and half of wasted time). The adjustment is kinda screwball, and I just turn whatever screw that works out (some being too loose and some being too tight, 3 screws per lens). I didn't bother adjusting the highbeams though - too lazy, and my whole point of having highbeams is blind people :P Besides, I really don't have a good stretch of road with a wall in front for me to bench my lights. None the less, I kinda got the low beam I want.

Before adjustment, I bet you I will piss every driver in front of me, blinding them even in low-beam (the lights were shipped with the beams pointed way high). After adjustment, I can really tell the difference - E-code just put out light more efficiently, as I no longer bitch and complain about needing the fogs to see at night. Wait until rain then I can tell how good they are.

HID... I'm still thinking, but maybe a while before I decide to get them. I think I'm satified for now, and I'm waiting for the dust to settle (and prices go down) in the HID market (4300K vs 6300K, different brands, etc)

Seymour run - maybe, is there a closer place? I know it's pretty close already, but in my area, something like river road in North Delta or Richmond, or even the freeways would do (I did went thru some farm roads, and stretch of Hwy 17 North). Of course, Seymour got corners, and Subarus hug corners, right guys?

I will probably get some pics if I get to wash my car this weekend...

To all drivers: you wanna cut me off now? :monkey: #D !

hmm, so you can't adjust the lights while they're on the car? how on earth do they expect you to adjust them properly then?

Lightbulb

What I implied was initially I thought the socket didn't work (it turn it's long enough for the screw to go thru the middle of the socket) so I ripped the lights out. What a stupid idea - anyhow, the socket driver was so awkward that it make sense to loosen the screw while the lights out (which I should have done), then hand adjust using only the socket (tiny little piece of round metal), as the socket driver couldn't fit. The top bolts have a wing nut on them, which made my life easier.

The other thing about ripping the lights out is the fact that the corners are held by a ball joint, which forces you to slide them out with both hands (no stupid gloves) on the side of the corner, then put all your weight trying to slide forward (fully expecting my hand to grip onto the side of the corner lights)

Waiting for some dark roads with rain

PS: Anybody know how to bench my light adjustment? how they should be?
