Default Bad clunking noise from front pass side when going over bumps? (05 STi)

I heard some squeeling from my right front wheel last week and it seemed to have gone away. Then this weekend I heard some "chatter" from the same area, but it was only ofr like a day, then was gone. Just now I drove down the block (car has been fine all day) and when ever I go over a bump it sounds like something is really loose and "hammering" against something. Once the car makes it through the bump and is on smooth road, it is fine. I can feel it in my feet and it seems like it's definitely coming from that right front wheel area.

Any suggestions?

Always check swaybar endlinks, bushings, and brackets first. Make sure they're tight and lubed properly.

Yeah, is your suspension stock, or do you have some mods done up front?
More specificly might you have aftermarket endlinks with spherical bearings?
If so, they probably just need more lube.

Have you considered pulling the wheel off and looking/checking around the rotor, brakes and suspension pieces in that area to see if anything is hanging or loose?

might be the lower ball joint...If its not the sway bar or endlinks etc...jack up the wheel and see if it wiggles side to side while the lugs are still torqued...that happened to my driver side front wheel.

I brought it by the shop today and they took it for a ride and put it on the lift and said everything is tight and feels fine, but it sounds like the noise is coming from inside the strut. So I'm suspecting a bad strut, they recommend the dealer check it out due to warrany issues, but I'm at 44,000 miles, so I suspect no more warranty.

First off Optimus Prime sorry to steal your thead! I have had this problem ever since i installed my Hotchkis street sway bar kit. I dont have front end links yet, could i lube them? if so how? I have checked and rechecked everything. I noticed the front end links are no longer straight up and down. It all started the day that i installed the front sway bar.

Thanks for the input.

It sounds like something is hitting the bump stops on the up travel (when going over a bump, when the car goes up). Could I have lost a bump stop?

Make sure to tourqe the strut towers when the weight of the car is on the tires not jack stands.

Tried that and no change, still the banging noise?

How does a blown strut sound?

that happened to one of my rears.....I thought I had blown another strut!!

when I blew a strut, it would knock several times very loudly on the majority of bumps. When the tophat was loose it'd knock/rattle on smaller/medium sized bumps and was not nearly as loud as the blown strut. Also, when I had a blown strut it'd be fine after I let the car sit for a while, then, once i hid a good sized bump it'd knock. The loose tophat did it all the time...now partial healing after sitting

I would inspect the right front wheel area. Maybe an endlink broke and the end of you sway bar is banging around. Either way inspect it or have the dealer inspect it.

Your description of a blown strut is exactly what I am experiencing. I actually got in the car the other day and it was not that bad, then after going over a few bumps, it started getting worse and worse till it was like someone hammering in the strut area, you can actually feel it!

So do most people think it is a blown strut? Because if so, what should I do. I contacted the dealer and it will be like around $500 to replace. Should i just get a set of Helix coilovers and replace it all now for $1000?
