Factory Subaru Gear Oil
Just a quick note. I was having the typical grind going from 3rd to 4th gear for the last month or so. I figured the synchro is to blame (and I still believe that). After taking it to Bunky Gandy Subaru (Huntersville, NC), though the car is officially out of powertrain warranty, Subaru will honor it. As a first step, though, they suggested changing the transmission gear oil to Subaru's new GL-5 (Subaru Part #K0323F0091 ). Though there was a long wait at the dealer this morning, they graciously provided me with four quarts in a brand new one-gallon fuel can. I changed the gear oil in our shop, and voila, problem fixed. I've noticed that shifting into all gears is easier and though fourth is a little slow, it no longer grinds.
I had changed to 75W50NS Red Line about 30,000 miles ago, and I will caution everyone to avoid it for our cars. Subaru is now recommending ONLY its gear oil, according to the techs. Now, I can see why. The only rub is for the shadetree mechanics among us. You can only buy it in five-gallon amounts. Soon, when I have time, I'm going to drain the differential (also RedLine 75W90NS) and change it to AMSOIL Severe Gear. I hope this helps! Writersblock

Bunky Gandy is just now getting into the Subaru game, so I think they are really trying to do everything by the book. The service guys (Eddie and Michael) are extremely helpful and certainly will go out of their way to help.

The fluid they used actually had a Subaru logo on the outside of the bucket. They gave me the part number, so I assume it is a Subaru part. I changed the fluid myself, BTW.

Any idea how much this fluid costs? I may be interested in trying it once my 15,000 miles on Scotty's cocktail expires (even though I haven't had any problems with the cocktail.)

I've been looking around for that stuff and the part number you listed above goes to something that costs more than $140.
I tried going in to my dealership this morning and they looked at me like I was crazy. Not only did she try to tell me transmissions are supposed to eat oil, but she hadn't a clue where to find Subaru gear oil. What about valvoline GL5 75w-90? BTW, this is the 6spd |

There was good thread some time ago about this gear oil in the motorsports forum- several teams are running this oil exclusively in both 5 and 6 speeds. Some of the teams tried a lot of different fluids before settling on the suby oil.
I bought a five gallon can from the dealer a year or so ago- it's covered w/ Japanese writing, so don't know if there is a domestic equivilant or not. The stuff works and keeps your warranty in tact as well. Kind of a pain buying a five gallon drum, but I won't be running out anytime soon |

I'll use synthetic motor oils, but when it comes to the tranny I'll definitely stick with OEM.

It's not synthetic, but it works- works very well. If you waltz into your dealer and ask them for "oem" tranny fluid- your liable to get anything. Many delaerships get 50 gallon drums of whatever is cheap.
You want the stuff that comes in the five gallon pail- part # listed above. I don't know where it's manufactured but the pail is covered w/ Japanese writing I've got ~ 15,000 on my last change and it's still shifting like butter (I'll be swapping it out at 20,000 just to keep it that way ) |

Is this good for the 04 STi 6 speed as well? When I pull that part number I swear it says 75/80. I have a grind going into 4th sometimes, almost all the time when the car is warmed up. I'd like to try the new oil.

I just bought that 20 liter barrel. Since I will only be using 4 liters of it, if you are close to Seattle and you can buy it from me by paying what I've paid (I paid $8/quart including shipping).

Many people use Redline 75W90NS w/no problems. To imply it is bad for ALL Subaru transmissions would be incorrect. I've been using it for several years w/no ill effects. BTW, Redline 75W90NS isn't for the rear diff, it's for the transmission. Redline 75W90 would be for the rear diff. There is rarely just one cure-all product. This is not to say the Subaru product is bad, as others beside yourself have said it works. Just remember a dealer will recommend it's own product as THE product to use. Standard protocol. |

I used Subaru Extra S when I had type RA gears installed into my WRX 5 speed. At my next gear oil change I forgot to specify it, got whatever the dealer was using as standard oil, and immediately (pulling out of the parking lot) got grind in first and 4th gears. Next day I replaced the standard oil with Extra S and the grind disappeared within a mile and hasn't returned for 50,000 miles. Extra S is amazing. There is a 20 liter can in my garage.
