Default project $2,000 car (with bonus transmission question)

so say you have $2,000 and you need to buy a car. it must be reliable, cheap to fix/easy to work on, fair to good in the snow and stickshift.

whaddya do?

bonus question: list as many cars as you can which were only sold with automatic transmissions. i'll start:

*.Subaru SVX

+1 for the beater Sentra. I had one of those for like 5 years.

Almost any car is decent in the snow with a good set of Blizzaks.

Nissan, get a nissan sentra or truck. They should last you for 500,000 miles at least.

Ever sat in a early 90's legacy? Those things are built like a rock, and the phase 1 EJ22's will last forever.

you're kinda right.. especially since when it breaks, 2wd is generally a lot cheaper to fix than 4..

Minus the fact subaru AWD never breaks (transmission doesnt count, its the transmission not the AWD!)

I'm all for the 1st Gen Legacy. I got one and it hasn't died on me. They are built strong too. They are easily capable of going through some fairly rough terrain for a road car as well as being quite a nice drive on the road.
Parts are also plentiful and they're about as easy to work on as any other Subaru.

consumer reports or some other place actually voted the '91 legacy the easiest car to work on for that year
