Default Need help finding place to live in Michigan

Hey all, I will soon be moving to Michigan to start a job. I just recently graduated from Purdue University in Indiana and accepted a job in Michigan with GM. I will be working in Romulus, Michigan and have to choose which city to live in. I have pretty much narrrowed it down to either Ann Arbor or the Novi/Farmington Hills area. If you were a 22 year old recent grad, where would you want to live? Thanks for the information that will be coming, Scott.

Royal Oak is pretty nice for younger folks (lofts and **** like that)

But you probably want something closer to Romulus.

Personally I live in St Clair Shores, gotta love the proximity to the water and the boating attitude of this city

I'm not sure how far of a drive you're willing to do, but Berkley, Royal Oak, Ferndale are all decent places to live and theyre not TOO painfully far from Romulus.

St Clair Shores is stupid and only stupid people without mohawks live there.

Ann Arbor is closer to Romulus than Royal Oak by perhaps 15 min or so. It's got some good bars and restaurants. Both locations are more "urban" than say Novi/Farmington (welcome to suburbia... )

Depending on the time of day you'll be commuting, the 275/696 commute suck rocks. Personally, I hate commuting (did the 45 min to 1hr 15 min commute for over 5 years in Chicago and never want to do that again) so I look for the easiest least stressful commute.

I'd almost say it's a bit...not much cheaper to live in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area (there are only a few decent parts of Ypsi) but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyhoo...nice to hear you're coming into the fold up in SE MI. Not sure since you're coming from Purdue that you deserve this but here ya go...

Ypsilanti would probably be a good place. Closer to that plant (I'm assuming it's the one on Ecorse, but I forget if it's engines or trans there) than pretty much anything listed and right next to Ann Arbor.

The drive from Royal Oak would suck. Novi/Farmington wouldn't be that bad, but 275 is usually a parking lot.

Ann Arbor would have lots of things to do for a 22 year old, but very expensive housing typically. Parts of Ypsilanti you wouldn't want to live in, as well as most of the cities around Romulus. Royal Oak is a nice place, but the drive could be horrible (depending on your work hours). Novi, Canton, Plymouth, Farmington are good areas and closer to Romulus.

I've also heard that Canton is nice... but stay away from Livonia, there's a bad element there!

+1 on 275 being a parking lot... I was coming back to Berkley from IKEA on Friday at 6 and I swear 95% of the people driving that are idiots who can't figure out what lane they should be in. If you drive it everyday how the heck can you not know what you're doing![/rant]

The nice thing about Metro Detroit is you can get most places easy enough via e-way.
Working in Romulus, I would recommend something in the Canton,Plymouth,Livonia, Westland, or Belleville area. Puts you about 15-30 from Romulus, in a nicer community, and if you play it right easy access to most major freeways.

You did not mention your budget, renting or buying, what type of city you are looking for. Are you looking for proximity to work, nightlife, shopping, schools, etc.?? Would maybe help narrow down the multitude of options. I agree with others that commute could be an issue depending on where you end up.

Ann Arbor isn't bad, now that some of the emo kids moved to Northville.

Farmington Hills/Novi isn't bad but as was pointed out, welcome to suburbia. Cops are bored (you will get ticketed for going through yellows... ) and most every restaurant is over priced.

My current apt in Novi is $725 a month and is within 5 minutes of both I96 and M5. It's a two bedroom place with about 900 sq ft.

Coming out of college I say its worth it to stick around ann arbor. You can find some decently priced places a little further from campus.. but then again im from NY, so AA prices are nothing compared to NY. There are lots of good places to eat, things to do, artsy sorta town if your into that, lots of hot girls. Alright I lied on that last part.. umich girls are just average. I'm actually in Columbus, IN right now with a internship with Cummins. And i've been in Oshkosh, WI for 4 months at GE. I must say, these towns suck compared to AA. You just rot away after work with nothing to do. I used to think location didn't matter.. not anymore. I gonna definitely being job hunting for companies in good cities/town.

It's defintely cheaper than around here.. Mike, the house prices you were quoting the other day were a lot lower than stuff in Royal Oak and Berkley..

To add to the thread.. I've lived in the western suburbs and Berkley and Royal Oak.. In terms of being young and having other young people around as well as stuff to do, I'd definitely pick Berkley or RO over western suburbs (Canton, Northville, Novi, West Bloomfield). So then it comes down to RO/Berkley area (45 min commute) or AA (30 min commute)..

I have a good friend who moved here 3 years ago after college for work, and his job told him to pick either RO or AA so that he could be around other young people (he worked from home, so no commute worries). He was going to move to AA cause it felt the most fun after visiting, but he ended up with RO. He figured he was done with college and didn't want to live in another college town.. RO is not necissarily much better than a college town, but there are no school's in the area, so it does have less crazy college kids, if nothing else.

All of this said.. if you can, visit each area before deciding and see for yourself.

Yeah it's definitely cheaper to buy in Ypsi than in RO/Berkeley area. Ypsi compared to A2 to buy is almost night and day. $150k in Ypsi will get you a 3 br w/a nice garage and small yard...in A2, you'll get a 600 sq foot shack.

Yes Ann Arbor is a college town but there are bars and restaurants that where more of the townies go to so you don't have that much of the "woohoo...I'm away from my parents I'm gonna get smashed" crowd.

Either location is good for a just out of college person. The "western suburbs" (Canton, Plymouth, Northville, Novi, etc) are a bit more boring and for people who are raising kids.

I guess I could add some more information. I will be renting an apartment and looking for either a 1 or 2 bedroom depending on prices. I was planning on spending around $750 I figured for rent, give or take a little. I was looking for really no more than a 30min. commute to Romulus.

It's seeming like Ann Arbor is gonna be the place for me, but I am gonna look around the Novi area too because a friend lives in Farmington Hills.

Ok I couldnt help it heres what I think:

Live in Detroit!
10 reasons:

1) Hippies live in A^2.
2) Stuck up Suburbanites live in (canton/novi/plymoth/northville).
3) Rent is way way cheaper.
4) Much more racially mixed.
5) Driving is more fun.
6) Street people are amusing.
7) Closer to the action.
8) Always some entertainment available.
9) Easier to get to ANY freeway.
10) When you tell people you live in Detroit they always have a good reaction.
