Brake cable

What is the correct way to remove brake cable from rear drum backing plate on a 98 legacy wagon? Haynes manuel says remove clip but I dont see one. Can the little tabs be raised with small screwdriver and then punched back down without them breaking off?

Are you sure there is no clip? It's a C shaped clip on the back side of the backing plate- there is a small slot on top where it fits as the cable comes out the back side. A small screwdriver works pretty good for popping it out.

If you don't have that not sure how it comes out.

I bough it used I guess someone has already lost the clip.

Thanks, but this job is going to wait until I need a bearing or axle. Subaru tect told me I could replace backing plate without removing hub. After starting the job I see it cant be done. So I will have time to get them from dealer before I start.
