Default Moving to Montreal, need help with car

Ok, so I'm moving to Montreal, QC. I was born there, but have been living in FL all my life. I'm going back for college and I just needed to get some info on what to do with my car. I'm not quite sure how insurance works in QC. I've heard something about liability insurance is on your driver's liscense? I'm not exactly sure. I know the proper way is to get my tag changed to a QC tag and exchange my driver license, but I heard I have to pay a lot of fees and back taxes on the car? Ohh and the car of course, its a '05 WRX wagon, perfect for Canada weather. So, I've been told my best bet is to keep tag and title in FL, keep my FL licesnse and get insurance that covers me in canada. Anyone got a clue who does that? I just need some info because I'm not sure how to bring my car to canada without paying through the foot to drive the lovely vechile. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you going as a student for 8 months keep all your FLA documentation.

You could also try www.montreal-subaru-club.com

Ok, I looked into it. It seems I would have to pay $4,000 to bring the car to Canada. Which for the maximum of two years would mean I would need a huge saving on my insurance each year. It doesn't seem very feasible. So, any companies that cover US plates in Canada. Anything for a student?

Even if you're in Montreal for a year or two it all depends on where your official residence is. For example, you're an Albertan if you can reasonably prove Alberta is your home province and you were in Alberta at 12:00 am, Jan 1st. I think you may want to look into it a little more as students get to hide out in residence limbo for a while.

Huh, why the hell would it help if I was an Albertan.

Sorry, I'll be a little more direct.

Call your insurance company and ask them, then call a QC insruance company and ask them.
