Default My "New" Race Car: Non-Subie Content

Just got back from a roadtrip, Chico, CA to Kansas City and back. Picked up this little Beast. His name is "Brick" and yes he loves lamp:

It's a 1972 Fiat 128 Sedan that is prepped for Vintage Racing. The story goes...this car was purchased new in 1972 and immediatly converted into a C-Production Race car and campaigined in the Mid West through 1978. It was then stored away until 1996, when it underwent a thorough restoration. Since then it has been run in SVRA events a few times per year.

It isn't 100% clean, nor perfect condition body/paint/interior wise. It is a race car, but with a couple weekends of attention, it will be a little prettier. Because, afterall, pretty = fast. Just ask Tom Hoppe.

Here are the basic specs:

weight: ~1,700 pounds
power: ~ 100-110hp (52hp stock)

-1290cc engine bored 0.040" over
-1116cc PBS Engineering big valve/port cylinder head (26cc combustion chambers should give around 9.7:1 compression, 8.5 stock)
-Twin Weber 42DCNF carbs, freshly rebuilt by Pierce Manifolds
-Alquati intake manifold
-PBS B-3 Race Cam
-Light flywheel
-freshly rebuilt Steve Hoeschler transmission, using X1/9 gears and 4:08 final drive
-2 race old axles, all suspension bushings, wheel bearings etc.
-fresh brakes including yet-to-be-bed Ferado pads
-X1/9 rear struts (shorter housing) with Koni inserts
-currently sitting on Cromadora CD91 wheels with 205/60-13 Hoosier Dirt Stockers
-2 sets of CD91 with fresh Hoosier TD Vintage rubber
-1 set of 13x7 Panasports with 215/50-13 V710
-Racetech seat, full harnesses
-in spec fire system
-8 gallon fuel cell
-spare brand new 1116cc short block
-spare rebuilt 1290cc short block
-spare brand new 1116cc PBS big valve/port head
-5 sets of struts
-enough new brake and suspension and wheel bearing parts to last a lifetime
-2 extra cams, including a PBS S2 and Alquait 40/80
-2 spare transmissions
-6 boxes of misc parts
-spare hood, rear trunk lid, 2 brand new front fenders
-14' beavertail tandem axle trailer

Tonight I hope to get more pics, especially of the interior and engine bay. I was just a bit too tired last night.

My plans are to run the car at some Thunderhill track days to get use to it this fall, then hit the track next year with the local SVRA club. Should be fun.

Oh, and yes, I know all about Fiat 128s, so IBfixitagaintony.

You need some bumpers for bump drafting.

Awesome!

Just out of curiousity, how much would one of those cost? Just a rough figure if you don't want to say.

The whole package ran about $5500, car, trailer, and tons of spares. My F250 extracab long bed is filled with big rubbermade bins full of new parts. I must have 5 sets of new brake rotors, new calipers, new struts, extra cams, hood, front fenders, all sort of stuff.

It probably seems like a lot for an old Fiat, but if you take out the trailer and half the spares, I figure i'll have about $3-3,500 in the car, ready to race.

BTW...this is replacing my existing track car...my '04 STi. I have a feeling I'll miss the power down the front straight at Thunderhill, but not the fuel, tire, and brake bills!

Its a completely different experience in a something like that.
I have a 61 mini.
What you give up in power, you gain in agility.

That being said, you have to be on your a game, as a mistake can't be made up by hammering the throttle.
It will make you a better driver, and it will be a lot of fun. Enjoy it. certainly seems like a fantastic price to me.

Very cool car. My uncle had one in Spain...I think it was a 128. I was only 4 when we were there but it was hella cool. Ran on propane I think.

What a beauty. Reminds me of the race-prepped (British) Ford Escort 1600s I pined after growing up.

Since we're talking Italian cars, anyone happen to have a Lancia Delta Integrale HF they're willing to part with...? <sigh>

The funny part is, back in my "youth" I owned a 1986 Yugo. It was my daily driver in College, and weekend autocross and track car. For those that don't know, a Yugo is built almost entirely from Fiat 128 mechanicals. My little Yugo had a 1500 X1/9 engine, cam, twin carbs, etc. Very similar setup to the 128 i just got. So in reality, I learned to race small, underpowered, front wheel drive cars.

Here is my wicked little Yugo from back in the day:

I'm looking forward to this weekend, and getting started on the Fiat.
