Default 50\50 AWD split on 99 Legacy?

Is there a way to make the 99 legacys an even 50\50 split. I heard that a couple of Subarus could have a fuse or something pulled to turn off the AWD and make it 50\50 4WD.

My understanding is that automatics have 50/50 when locked in 1st & 2nd, 90/10 otherwise. Manuals are always 50/50.

EDIT And the only fuse I know of is to make them FWD only, used for emergency situations only I believe.

That is correct ...the 4EAT in the BD series in 1st, 2nd & 3rd ... is 50/50 split .... very nice for rallyx and works well for autocross too ...

Fuse is for towing, not driving the car, so you don't fry teh center differential.

5MT= 50/50 split
4EAT=90/10 split, unless of course you lock it in 1st or 2nd...I didn't think 3rd was 50/50 as well...

Yeah I never heard 3rd being 50/50, no real reason for it to be IMO. In 1st or 2nd, you might want to lock it in those gears for a set power distribution as you are going slow enough where it could make a difference. If you lock it in 3rd, you won't have enough power at a low speed for it to matter and the computer is better off managing the power distribution at more typical third gear speeds; IMO

Yup, that was pretty much my understanding

5spd = 50/50 all the time,
Auto = 90/10 (didnt know about the locking in 1st/2nd making it 50/50)
When at the dealer though, I recalled him stating (granted was for a BH) the fuse is only there in the Auto's, not the manuals.

Well that makes sense, since it is the gears & differentials themselves that
force the MT to be at 50/50. The 4EAT is computer controlled, thus changing a fuse can affect how the AT operates.

so what happens if you need to get a tow for some reason and your battery is dead? i wouldnt think the fuse would save you there.

for the original poster. there are hi-lo transfer cases available that cause you to lose the AWD in favour of a high/low gear range, making it 4x4. here is more info.
however, if you have the automatic tranny you're probably SOL.
