The compression is 8.0:1.

My compression tested 120/118/118/110 at ~4300ft.

I've seen the turbos go well over 160k miles without service, they're really excellently built.

As for the trans, it should work, but know this. The torque will tear it to shreds in 20-30k miles. The Turbo used the WRX trans and was much stronger than the NA version.

Post Legacy turbo engine-compression and turbo q's...

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a turbo legacy motor and was wondering if someone can tell me the compression that these motors are suppose to have. I've been seeing 130-170 on different engines so far.

I would also like to know from other turbo legacy owners about how long the turbos on these engines last. I know there are several factors involved but I just want a general figure based upon ownership.

I was also told that the 2.2 impreza tranny will bolt up to the turbo legacy motor. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for any help.

Hey Dave, do you have any idea what those numbers would be corrected to sea level? I just did a compression test on an '81 280ZX Turbo engine with 160000 miles on it and got 135's across the board (normal is 142psi). And that's with 7.3 to 1 compression. I hope I'm not giving you bad news here, but when you don't take altitude into consideration, those numbers of yours seem low

(so that's how you add smilies!)

I think the atmospheric pressure at 4200ft is close to 12PSI, though i'm not entirely sure.

That said, it'd be close to %20 more.

Also, it was a stormy, low-pressure day so i'm sure it could have been even lower.

Still, 3 were within 2PSI. 4 bad compression rings at 90k miles? Not likely!

Yeah, an extra 20% would make sense. I looked in the Haynes manual for exact numbers, but the stupid book says "Look in this chapter's specifications" when describing compression testing, but the numbers just ain't there!

Thanks for your response. Now I just have to locate a 5spd manual tranny and ECU.

Wish me luck!

Good luck.

STOP !!!, 2.2 Turbo has about 165 HP at 8 PSI of boost, I have may 91 subaru turbo legacy in PGT that I Pro Rally, I would wait for some of the new turbo's thay can yield much more HP's, note: I don't think the gaer box will match the set up is a lot differnt.
