My car has made the noise since day one. I asked about it and was told it was normal by two different techs so I don't worry about it.

My first post to the forum...most of these posts seem to be about new cars, or cars with very low mileage. I just bought a 2003 WRX Wagon with 120k miles, it's now up to 133k, and I have the same noise. Obviously it's out of warranty, and while the noise is disconcerting, the car still runs fine and has for 133k miles, so if there are any lasting effects, they haven't happened yet. Just another data point.

Just another update. The pumping of lesser air for the rear tires thing dont work for me. But other then the grinding noise everything works well for me.

Default gearbox rattle

First post to the forum - I joined so I could find out more about my gearbox rattle. I think the symptoms on my '06 WRX sedan, 62k miles have been described many times on this thread, but I will reiterate:

1. In-gear (any gear) deceleration (foot off gas pedal, foot off clutch) causes metal on metal clanky-rattle that appears to be timed with wheel speed.
2. I hear the same rattle when I initially engage the clutch.
3. Most reproducible in second/third gears.
4. During normal/steady driving (constant speed with foot slightly on gas), I can feel a little bit of a periodic "chip" or "quick grind" with my hand on the stick shift knob - again, timed with the rotation of the wheels.

The sound appeared rather suddenly shortly after moving to california, but hasn't really changed since it started. It seems to change in severity with temperature or humidity.

I've tried researching for common gearbox problems and I've found the most help on this thread. I also have another clue that maybe someone can shed some light on. If you look at clutch kits like this:

http://www.thepartsbin.com/sitemap/s...kit~parts.html

the description mentions "Performance Clutch Includes a silent type disc to reduce gearbox rattle noise". I'm obviously a total noob with diagnosing noises, but here are some questions: Is gearbox rattle common? Is gearbox rattle the same problem I/we am/are experiencing?

Yep, definitely change with temp and humidity. The tire pressure thing made it better, but it never went away. Oh well. It doesn't appear to be a fatal issue, so I guess I'll stop worrying about it.

Well i guess i've fallen victim to the decel rattle as well. I just installed a ACT Streetlite flywheel - 13.9 lbs - and an Exedy OEM clutch kit. I just wanted to see if everyone with this noise only gets it once the car is warmed up. It only seems to start once i have driven for about 5-10 mins when the car reaches temp and only seems to be above the 2000rpm mark. I also have the Perrin lightweight crank pully. Does anyone think if I put a stock crank pulley back on it will help at all? I'm still trying different tire pressures to ease it, i'm at 30 rear 34 font, and it's still there. I'm also going to try adding a little more gear oil to the trans as a test. Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

If your noise is gear box rattle I can tell you it is common and I have heard it in many WRX's. My buddy's 02 has done it for a long time, even with his new RA gear set it still does it. Add hardened mounts and it is even louder. My 05 STI has a bit of it and it is more noticable as I put more miles on the car.

well it never made the noise untill the lightweight flywheel install. It's my understanding the reduced weight of the flywheel does not provide enough load on the gears and the backlash in the gears less the load causes the noise/rattle/grinding. So i thought if i put my stock crank pulley, the tire pressure trick, and a little extra gear oil might help add some load back and keep it under control. We'll soon find out. I guess installing the Group-N trans mount isn't going to help but I broke the bolt on the stock one and for the same price as a stock replacement i had to upgrade!

Did you ever find a fix? Anyone have a lightweight crank and revert back to the stock one or try adding some gear oil? I figure since it's an OEM clutch and a streetlite flywheel (13.9 lbs) the "heaviest" lw fw available i should be able to get it down to a minimum. I'll post back and let you know over the next couple weeks.

Actually the problem went away by itself. I could describe the sound as say a heatshield or something being loose and rattling around? it wasnt though... sounded like it.

def a grinding sound

I've got it too. Seems like when I bought the car in Phoenix it didn't do it, but upon returning to the PACNW the first trip I took in it long distance it started. It doesn't do it always, just usually.

I get it after long trip and then engine-brake downhill in low gear.

I get this noise pretty bad. STi tranny mount, STi engine mounts, and Group-N pitch mount. Its audible outside the car, and quite badly inside the car when engine braking between 2000-4500 RPM. Well at least I know I'm not the only one.

Wow, Just finished my clutch replacements and I thought I did something wrong, glad I found this thread. Anyone find something that fixes it without going back to stock flywheel? This issue seems way too common to have not been solved yet.

If anyone is keeping tabs on when it shows up if not present before, here's my details: Just put in a street flywheel and exedy OEM replacement on 02 wagon with 83K miles, replaced stock clutch/flywheel, no issues before. Car now has the 2000-4500 decel grinding noise, with a touch of pulsing to the noise.

I had the same set-up installed on my 03 WRX with the Exedy OEM clutch and the 13.9 lb Gruppe-S LW flywheel. I did have a LW crank pulley and IAG Performance (who did the install) told me to replace the LW crank pulley with the stock one. As soon as I replaced it, the decel noise was still there, but not as noticeable. Since then, I replaced the stock pulley with the Kartboy type (2.5 lbs) LW pulley and same results as when I have the stock pulley...but the car does pull harder and faster w/ the KB pulley compared to stock. IAG told me that the lightweight flywheel would definitely increase the decel noise...it's just normal for our cars. In retrospect, i wish I just reinstalled the stock flywheel.

Also, if you have hardened tranny mount bushings, etc...even more decel noise. I swapped my bushings for the Noltec ones and that seemed to help even more in decreasing the noise.

I just installed an oem exedy clutch with an autozone oem flywheel about 4,000 miles ago. I am getting the same type of deceleration noise. Especially in neutral, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I can certainly hear it grinding when I decelerate around 2800rpms along with slight vibration in the cabin. But it does seem to go away after driving the car for several miles. Other than that the car runs great.

i get a noise also from deceleration from 3rd and 2nd gear. im not sure if its a rattling noise though, it sounds like a clunking noise to me. i brought it to the dealer last time and told them about it and they said it was rear differential. they said it was normal and wouldn't affect performance but if i wanted they would change it out for a new one, but they couldn't guarantee that the noise would go away

I also have this noise after i put a new clutch in it,but i used the stock flywheel and i didnt have the noise before it changed it.I just put a stage1 and a act street lite flywheel in it and i still have the same problem. It sounds like its the driveshaft. Could it be just a bad u joint?

WOW! I'm a bit relieved (only a little). I finally finished off my stock clutch at 108K mi. and swapped in an ACT Xact (13.9lb.) LW FW, w/ Exedy OEM clutch disc & pp yesterday. I am the original owner of the car and have never heard these 'grinding' noises, but now I do. Same M.O......only on decel (w/ engine load) right around 3k rpm. Anyone come across a definitive answer yet?

I have spent the last couple of hours reading previous posts on this and there have been many "possible solutions"....i.e.

tire pressure fix
adjusting shift linkage (if anyone knows how..please share)
adding (past F) more tranny oil
adjusting the clutch pedal tracel (not sure how to do this one either).

Can anyone help?????????
