Read post 315, I solved the issue, its the clutch disc that causes the rattle.

Very good information here! I have the Exedy HD clutch and I've been having the same decel noise issues ever since I installed it. I'm going back to OEM next time around!

Good and bad news to people, the problem seems to be the disc springs on exedy clutch. The thing is that exedy "OEM replacement" is NOT OEM! Please see pics below. The real OEM clutch has smaller springs with two extra coils, another spring inside (dual spring) with a subaru part number written on it.

I basically followed the Subaru part of service bulletin (may 1st, 03 NUMBER:03-51-02R) and ordered for my 04 WRX wagon, 5MT 2L turbo
Shopping list
Flywheel: 12342AA071
Clutch Disc: 30100AA881
Clutch cover: 30210AA630
Bearing: 30502AA080
Bolts (need 8 ) 800508310

However I suspect that most people can get away with just the clutch cover and disc replacement. Also I found that redline oil will aggravate the problem, more so if you run heavyweight. I had LWSP in the box and when I flushed it out the rattle decreased but was still there. I suspect due to the friction modifiers causing gear backlash, in short LWSP is too thick for the box, diffs are now quieter as well since switch back to OEM castrol. Also lightweight flywheels will cause this issue but thats been addressed in this thread already.

The real OEM clutch is feather light and grips, its like the new MY08-10 clutch. Not only does it not rattle but it so much smoother, grips better, responded so much better (might also be due to the updated OEM flywheel) and very light. Joy to drive, I can finally go downhill with being embarrassed and drive in traffic without getting a sore knee.

Out with the old

in with the new

i've noticed this problem since switching to mobil 1 0w-30 last month....it never did it before...gotta remember to see if it goes away when i switch back to 5w-30. It only does it when decelerating in first or second gear..

I was encountering the same noise when decelerating in 04 wrx and I put my front tires to 40 psi and rear to 36 and now have no noise

Yeah. I put air in my tires yesterday as well. I did 42/40 & it seems to have made the noise disappear some....pretty odd.

so the rattle came back & i set tire pressure to 44/40 which didn't remedy it. finally i was able to hear the rattle with the car idling and went under the hood to locate the noise. the sound is coming from under my turbo heat shield so i'm pretty sure it's actually the wastegate chattering. i'm gonna go tighten the wastegate arm a tad in hopes that the chatter goes away.

It only chatters when at low boost at around 2200-3200rpm. I hope the sound lessens because it's really irritating.

Are you guys nuts? Do you have any idea how high that is once the tires are warm??

This could be your actual heat shield causing the noise... The welds attaching the heat shield to the downpipe often break (happened to me after going to an aftermarket dp) and it caused the rattling sound you are talking about...

I plan on removing the turbo heat shield Saturday if this horrendous rain stops. Once the car warms up, the sound is gone. I got an Invidia dp ready to put in so if it's the shield on the downpipe, i'll have to live with it for a bit longer as I wait for the the uppipe & header to come in.

Is this the decelleration noise that is happening to others? My car just started doing it today, it only has 26xx miles on it.

You have to listen closely to hear it, the wind noise is almost louder than it and it's quieter than the decelleration whine. It happens almost exactly at 1900-1800 rpms.

Hi,

Is everything still great? No deceleration noise around 3k? I noticed when I had my clutch replaced with the exedy OEM clutch as per your pic1 "the non-subaru part number" there was no noise for a while but I guess as things wore in I'm back to square one.

Thinking about getting the "official" subaru parts if your problem is still resolved.

Thanks...

i have an 02 wrx and changed my clutch to the exedy oem replacement. i get the decel noise just like eeryone here! so the problem is that exedy did not make an oem style clutch? so the only way to fix the problem is to get an oem clutch from subaru? how much are they there anyways since they always rape their prices

0w and 5w are the cold temp viscosities, they are both 30 at operating temp. Doubt this has anything to do with it.

Have there been any reports of automatics with this problem? My 4EAT '02 WRX definitely has a deceleration noise...any slight throttle input makes the whine go away.

This is exactly the noise I have in my 2013 WRX with less than 1500 miles on it. Any new info?

Glad I found this thread. My car is doing the same thing at just below 2k RPMs and decelerating, too. I told the dealer to look at it when I took it in for the 3000 mile oil change, and they claimed it was a heat sheild beneath my gear box. They told me they tightened it, seemed to go away for a day or so, then come back. I don't know what to think. Kind of makes me nervous, especially since it started at less than 1000 miles.

I posted the video a few posts above almost two years ago. I now have about 21k miles on my car and have had 0 issues with my transmission. I think it's just normal noisy subaru transmissions. I also occasionally have a small "grab" when pushing into third gear that lasts a split second then it goes right in. From what I've read this is also another quirk of the transmission. Don't fret over it. For a sub $30k car with performance like ours it's reasonable to expect the transmission to not be at BMW/porsche levels in terms of its smoothness. At least they hold power fairly well after the LGT gears were thrown in.

I have had this problem on my 2012 wrx since I bought it. Sometimes it sounds fine sometimes it doesn't. I did put in a Perrin Pitch Stop mount when I put in a new TMIC and it helped immensely. My next stop will be getting rid of the slop in the drive-line by going to a carbon fiber drive shaft, and upgrading the tranny mount.

50K later on my 2005 WRX and I still have the noise, tranny still works lol. I gave up and just accept the subaru love.

i had a smiliar problem. It was more of a rattle while idle and in neutral. Push the clutch in and it went away. Also made sound accelerating/decelerating in 1st. I replaced the throwout bearing and took a look at where the throwout mounts to the pressure plate. There is a little o-ring clip thingy and it seemed to be really loose and wiggly. So i took this off and bent out the metal tabs holding it in and reinstalled everything. Noise is gone. not sure if the throwout fixed this or the o-ringy clip thingy

Just took mine back into the dealership for a second time to see what they'd say and get it documented in case it is an issue in the future. Seems like they were quite thorough while they had it jacked up and couldn't replicate the sound. They took two rides with multiple people, but it may have been hard to hear since it was raining. Will let you know if anything develops in the future. The first time I had it in they said they tightened up a heat sheild. Here's to hoping it's nothing!

Mine told me it "something all of them do since they drove multiple cars that do it" anyways got it documented incase
