Post Are JC Sports intakes worth it as a performance mod?

Or is it just something that will make the car louder w/o making it any faster.

I actually had a Minnam intake on my 97 Legacy GT before the "incident." I noticed that the car got noticeably faster, especially at the top end. I noticed an immediate improvement in the willingness of the engine to rev. But the sound of the intake is something in itself.

The intake would give off a loud tone from 2000-3000 rpm and then quiet-down somewhat, but once it hit 5500 rpm it would get progressively louder until it hit 6000 rpm where the intake was just screaming.

That was before I BLEW MY MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR!! A replacement cost me a quick $350. The strange thing is, I had driven with the intake for a good 35,000 miles (hard miles) before the MAF failed. My only explanation is that for a short time before the sensor destruction, I hadn't run the engine under hard acceleration past 6000 rpm. I really believe it was that last 500 rpm before redline that killed the MAF.

So I had to replace all of those plastic intake bits and opted to go for a K&N panel filter. Some horsepower gains were noted, but not nearly as significant as the intake.

Be forewarned.

Kevin - I have the JC sports intake on my '98 Legacy L for over 2 years now, and I do have to say it's worth time $$.. It really "loosened" up the engine to allow it to rev. The sound of the intake is only noticeable at idle and also while accelerating past 2000rpm... at cruising speeds however, very little sound is noticed.

But I like my low end grunt. Is there an intake that doesn't bring about that penalty? Heck, low end torque is much of the reason our Scoobies drive faster than the horsepower ratings would have you believe.

Subiegal, I'm thinking of the Stromung exhaust to go with the JC intake. Good choice? What are other Legacy GT folks running for exhaust systems?

Wink

I have had an intake (weapon R ) for well over a year..

*you will lose your low end

*you will gain a nice little growl

*you run a risk of the MAF going (mine never has...)

*you will notice a gain (slight) in the top end but it does take more time to get there..

worth it?? I'd say yeah all things considered...

intake + exhaust mod = massive improvement!

but don't do 1 without the other.

just my $.02
