Default How to service JL audio sub?

I don't have a dealer within 80 miles of me so I bought a W6 off the web 3 years ago. Its malfunctioning and I just want to pay to have it refurbished. JL is being a PITA saying I need to go through a dealer 80 miles from me, I say why would I mess with them, its not thier problem.

Question is, is there a easier way to handle this? Thanks!

What exactly is malfunctioning? There isnt much to go wrong on a subwoofer

I have a couple subs from a company that used to be about an hours drive away, but they wouldn't let me come pick them up when I bought them direct. They are heavy and shipping costs a lot.

I think they just hate making special cases.

The easier way to handle this is to get a new sub. I'm not sure what the refurbish cost is, but for <$150 you cna get some great 10" subs on the market, and some even decent 12" subs.

It pops at anything above audible levels. Once the sub starts to move it pops and scratches. JL said I have a amp sensitivity problem, new sub confirms that was not the case. In eny event I paid like $300 for the damn thing and now all it is, is a big paper weight. I have never blown a sub in 15+ years of car audio and I usually buy high end stuff just for that reason. This was my first JL and my last. It sounded ok but definitly not worth the cost.

I want to get it refurbished and try to recoup some money, unless someone wants to buy it and confirm that it is blown and I'm not all wet. Thanks

By having it refurbished, and costing you more money, how is this recouping costs? It's costing you more.

Suck it up, cut your ties to JL speakers as they are overpriced, and are not all that great, and get a new sub.

they are great but they are overpriced.

the voicecoil is fried. that is not serviceable. the only thing you do on a sub is put a new cone or a new surround on it. anything to do with the voice coil = throw it away.

you got scammed out of $300.. sorry

I didn't figure it would be much more then $140 to repair and then sell for $200-$250 in ebay

Crap just looked on ebay and they are only around $240 now (still overpriced!) now I'm only looking at selling it at most $200 and picking up $60...yeah that sucks. Fricken over priced crap...

voicecoil is going to cost you more than $140 to fix...it's called a new sub. JL is not going to help you out most likely especially if you bought it online.

thats why i dont buy from ebay
anyway i have to agree a new vc is going to cost you more then the sub is worth... might not even be the vc i use to have w6's and on one of them the magnet came loose and moved a hair off center causing the vc to run against it making similair sounds to what your describing. if i would tap the magnet with a rubber mallot it would stop intill i hit a bump and it would go back.. after about a week i took the sub apart to see what i could do and it wasnt even worth trying to repair. Im thinking thats not your problem as mine would also get very stiff when this would happen chances are its just a fried coil. just thought i would share that story

What a jip, nothing is wrong with Ebay, I'm just mad that after only 3 years of no abuse it fails. I can see if this was a <$200 a sub but it supposed to be the cream of the crop. Oh well live and learn. I have a old school speaker repair shop near me maybe I'll let them have some fun

There are many cases of people taking JL subs apart to remove the serial # on it. When the glue it back together they use a ****ty glue that falls apart after a couple of years....happened to a friend of mine.

cut your losses and move on. if you end up going to a shop they are going to charge you shipping to and from JL, on top of the parts and labor. it simply won't be worth it in your case. in any event, it sounds like your sub is fried.

Ummm...what the hell do you think a recone is?

Dont listen to these people...a VC is most certainly repairable...you just have to get a new one. Usualy you can reorder a recone from the company that made the sub, or there are other companies that do several different brands of sub. A recone almost always comes with a new surround, spider, and voice coil along with the tinsel leads. Some even come with the glue you need to reatach the cone and everything. Many companies will even recone a sub for you if you send it to them

The only problem is, is that it is usually not worth it. You have to decide if the sub you have is even worth fixing. More than likley, you could spend a bit more cash and buy a brand new sub instead of repairing one that borke in the first place.

Hope this helps.
