Question Cruise control help (both buttons under petals are intacted)

I have been having an ongoing issue where my cruise control does not work. The button lights up but the joy-stick on the steering wheel does nothing.

I am looking for (among other suggestions) a picture of the button under the clutch petal that I have heard, causes some car's cruise controls not to work. From my understanding it is something that the cruise control contacts while not in use, causing the button to un-press when the clutch is pushed in, shutting down the cruise control. If this button is missing or broken, the car thinks your clutch is always in.

Can someone PLEASE snap a picture of this for me so I can look to see if I'm missing it??? I'd really appreciate it.

It wouldn't be physically under your clutch pedal on the floor. The cruise disengages at much less depression than that.

I had this problem, on my 03 it's a round white plastic button that pushes in the hole. Pic sorry don't have one, but it was easy to figure out. The switch plunger was going through a hole instead of contacting the button. Look at where the switch makes contact there should be a plastic button.

FYI: ours wore out. The switch was not adjusted correctly. It was acting as a pedal stop instead of just a switch. Just took a little adjustment and all is well.

I took a pic of course it's hard to see. It's at the end of the pencil. You can see the brake one easier. It's just like the one for the brake switch. If one pedal has plastic button and the other doesn't then one's missing.

I took some pictures. Would it be where the white circle is on the image below?

The ABS light is not on and the horn works (those were some other comments). I'm heading down to check out the white button (I couldn't really see on the digi cam when I took the pictures)

Okay. I just went under and looked at both the clutch and brake petal and when I press them down a little black nipple-like-button comes out. Likewise, when I let the petal go back to the resting position it depresses each button.

I guess this is not the problem after all unless there is something else to check in regards to these two mysterious black buttons??

Other than that I'm open to more suggestions on how to fix my cruise control

Which plug? The one connected to the buttons under the petals or the plug to something else?

Here's something to think about - I don't know if it applies to Subarus, but it did on both Ford vehicles I owned before my WRX.

If both brake lights are burnt out (the normal lamps, not the high-mount center light), the cruise control will not engage. This is because the circuit that disengages the cruise when you press the brake pedal looks for current to flow across the brake lamp circuit. So if the system that deactivates the cruise control can't be guaranteed to work, the car won't let it be activated.

All of my lights and turn signals work fine. But please keep sharing ideas. Anything is worth more than a trip to the dealer and $150 to diagnose the problem.

How fast were you going when you tried to engage the cruise control? Please explain exactly how and what you did.

well can't see what year car you have but some 2.5's ahve a little vacuum hose running from the passengerside of the intake manifold to the cruise box near the strut on passenger side. that hose loves to fall off, especially if you are messing around wiht the air box.

Background:

This is a 2000 2.5RS. The problem happened roughly a year ago and I gave up back when I found out and am trying to figure it out again. I have one of those aluminum intake tubes going from the stock intake box to the passenger corner of the engine bay behind the headlight. There weren't any hoses connected to the stock piece that this replaced, but I will try to check the actual air box itself because I remember a hose being on it (I'll report back on that later).

The problem occurs when I am on the freeway going 65 or 70. I have tried at 45 also just 'cause. I press the button next to the fog light button and the light goes on. Then, I use the joystick on the steering wheel and nada. Nothing happens. I actually can't remember (since it has been so long) if there is a "cruise" light on the dash or not. Can someone please let me know if there is on for the 99-01 RS, thanks.

I'll check the hose, but other than that, I'm still open to any and all suggestions as I have heard of a few people having this issue. Someone said the dealer replaced a "bushing" but he didn't know which one and was going to check on it. I'll report back on that if he gets back to me.

it doesn't connect directally to the airbox, but it has a plastic clip that ties it to the r/h pcv hose so when you mess with the pcv sometimes it falls off the cruise unit. it's the vacuum supply line it uses to opperate. since you like pics i hijacked one from the powdercoated intake mani thread and drew arrows where the hose connects.

Thanks for the pic, and yes, I do like pictures

I will check on that this afternoon. How many total hoses come out from the whole intake setup: anything that connects to the intake before it connects to the throttle body. ?

From the pictures I count 3 hoses but perhaps there are more underneath. The reason I am asking is because my setup looks different and I want to know the number of hoses I am looking for in my car

I just did an analysis of the intake and my whole intake setup only has 2 hoses coming out of it. Both are coming from the intake box itself, one on each side, and the two hoses go to the engine between each of the two spark plugs on both sides (I hope that creates a visual for you). All ends of the 2 hoses were still connected so I'm guessing that's not the issue.

What's next? Keep 'um coming!

P.S. I think the '99 had a differnet intake than the '00 and '01. It was something about a MAP vs. MAF sensor (or vice versa) that was changed from the 99 to 00-01 years. Perhaps that is why there is the extra hose... just a guess though

sorry i should have specified the hose i'm talking about is not attached at all to the intake. it runs from #3 intake runner to the cruise unit. it is just commonly bumped into during airbox removal.

your intake should have three hoses, one from each valve cover, and one from the pcv tree. any other ports on the intake should be capped.

disregard the intake in the pic, i was just showing where the vacuum line for the cruise is. the intake in the pic looks different, like some kinda plate is in front of the throttle body.

Can you describe to me a bit more of where the #3 intake runner. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

Last night I dove into my engine bay and followed evey hose I could find and they were all attached at both ends. So, if that is the case, what other suggestions do people have as to a next step?

Question

a. did you buy the car used?
if yes then b. if no then c.

b. are you able to turn on your fog lights without turning on your head lights? Did you do any wiring to make this happen a year ago?

c. you mentioned you tested at 45 mph, but didn't say if it happens at that speed or not. Does this happen at all speeds?

I bought the car new. I am not able to turn on my fog lights without headlights and I have not messed with any wiring in the car.

The cruise control doesn't work at any speed

1. When you drive along over 40mph with the cruise control button lit (no, there is no cruise light in the instrument cluster on my '99 RS), and press the joystick down.. do you hear a click from the dash? When the cruise control engages, it throws a relay inside the dash and you can hear it make a *click*.

If you aren't hearing the click.. it's probably an electrical issue. If you do hear the click, it's probably a mechanical issue.
---
---
The vacuum hose that they are trying to get you to find is attached to the cruise control servo where the curved arrow is pointing:

The servo is a round canister near the firewall that looks similar to the brake booster. It has a throttle cable coming out of one end that goes to the throttle body.

The question is.. does the servo have a vacuum hose connecting it to the intake manifold?
---
---
If it is an electrical issue, you can use a circuit tester to test the switch at the clutch pedal. Remove the electrical connector at the rear of the switch and hook up the circuit tester to the leads on the switch. Then move the pedal in an out to see if the circuit opens and closes in relation to the pedal.

Wow. All good information. I have never listened for a "click" sound when I use the joystick, but from my memory I do not recall hearing one. Is this the same sound that you hear when you have the windshield wipers on intermittent or when the rear defroster turns off? I hear those all the time and I don't recall hearing a click of the cruise control... but it has been a while so Iíll try again this evening on my way home.

I will look for the vacuum hose again. Here is a better pic of the engine bay of the 2.5RS (not mine). Can you mark it with an arrow if you see it on here Ė or do I need a vantage point from the passengerís side of the engine bay?

As far as the electrical testing, I donít have that kind of testing equipment, nor do I know how to perform such testsÖ If it were electrical, hypothetically, would it more than likely be a problem with the cruise control unit (near the gas petal) or the joy-stick switch? Iím just trying to think of things to possibly swap with someone (if I can find someone) to test since I donít know how to perform the necessary electrical tests.
