Have a Nice Day? went to the drag strip this past wed

yeah I know the WRX isn't made for drag racing but just wanted to try it atleast once. I have a GReddy Evo 2 exhaust, Invidia V2 downpipe, Perrin intercooler hoses, Perrin intake charge pipe.
my first run of the night was this I launched at 1500rpm
R/T .638
60' 2.201
330 6.172
1/8 [email protected]
1000 12.427
1/4 [email protected]

my second to last run was this launched at about 3k RPM
R/T .755
60' 2.246
330 6.250
1/8 [email protected]
1000 12.370
1/4 [email protected]

my worst run of the night was this launched at about 3k rpm
R/T .359
60' 2.632
330 6.888
1/8 [email protected]
1000 13.167
1/4 [email protected]

temps were in the 90's with high humidity it was raining off and on they stopped us from running a couple of times due to rain. I've drag raced many times before but this was first time with a car that was turboed. Seemed the boost was different on each pass I made one run I'd have boost til almost 7k in one gear the next pass I'd start to loose boost at 6k in the same gear.

you need to get tuning dude....those are horrible times for your mod list. The reason why you cant launch for isht is because your first gear has max what 8psi of boost? Get EM.

You need to launch at a lot higher rpm. Your 60ft times are KILLING you. With your setup you should be into the 13s. 1500-3k is FAR too low rpm for a 2.0L turbo car.
Leave the line around 5200. No it will not kill your transmission. Just dont drop the clutch. I did this HUNDREDS of times with no tranny problems, 300+whp and an aftermarket clutch.

Tuning has exactly dick to do with his times. A bone stock 2003 WRX can make 1.8 60ft times. He is launching FAR too slowly. My buddy ran 13.5 in an 02 WRX with nothing but a manual boost controller. No tuning, only running 16PSI.

The "throw more money at it if its slow" mentality of this forum is pathetic. Learn to drive the car before you spend money. Why pay for more mods when you are running much slower because of the driving? Practice instead. I was the same way until I got a clue. Then with nothing but practice I shaved .5 off my 1/4 times consistantly. Had I asked here you guys would have told me my tune was junk or I needed a bigger turbo

Yes, everyone needs a bigger turbo. Even once you upgrade it, in a few months it feels slow. 500whp feels slow after you get used to it. When I first hit 309whp, I though my car was god. And at the time, 300whp WRX's were relatively rare. In 3 months it felt like a stock civic to me.
My STI was a good bit faster once the mods were in and it was tuned, and still in 6 months, it felt dog crap slow.
You will always get used to it.

But dont do it to run better in the 1/4 until you are at least pretty close to what your setup should run. Do the upgrade, but do it for the right reasons

tuning has all to do with it, on a stock WRX you dont boost worth jack in 1st gear and its VERY hard to launch the car correctly. Having more boost in 1st gear will help a great deal. IDC who can do this who can do that, obviously hes not a pro drag racer. Launching at a higher rpm the incorrect way with low boost will result in a bog down. If he has more power/boost in first gear it will pull him through his powerband. Spending money has jack to do with it, he can always get a manual boost controller and set it at the stock boost level and he will STILL be able to launch better.

So dude practice all you want running stock EM with your mods, pulling a 1.8 on a stock WRX even wtih a turboback is difficult no matter whom tells you different. you need to boost more in first gear... Just try a manual boost controller set it to 13psi and try it out.(even though I wouldnt usually recomend this with no EM your gonna run kinda lean) But just so you can see how much better and how much easier its gonna be to launch

Pulling a 1.8 takes a good deal of practice, but a 2.2 60' is mostly due to poor launch technique and slow shifting. It does not take a lot of practice to get down near 2.0 - mid 1.9 60' times.

ScoobyRacing03, there are quite a few threads that discuss proper launch technique, you need to do a search for them. You will find like Davenow say's your not launching properly and as a result there is no boost at all available. You need to launch at higher rpm and under boost to get descent times and that is possible on a nearly stock car once you learn the technique.

I found launching at around 5g and letting the clutch out pretty quick gives me my best launches. It is hard to do to your car though. If you have any mechanical sympathy it will make you cringe the first few times. Id recommend lining up against someone you really want to beat to get the motivation to go harder. thats how it worked for me.

I was launching at 3k and was running 14.0-14.1 in my STi and first time I launched at 5500rpm I went straight to a 13.4, best 60ft of 1.81 all day. The rest were 1.98-1.88

sypher, more boost is not the solution to his problem. Yeah the car may not boost much in first gear, but adding more is not going to help him if his driving is not up to par. Just for a little reference...I can cut high 1.9 60ft's in my N/A RS. It has all the bolt on's, and is making maybe...at the very most...200chp...I would make him look like a fool off the line, and if he can't drive well...I just might even beat him across the line if he keeps running 14.9's and mid 15's...just learn to launch the car, and you will be golden.

Yeah and I ran a [email protected] mph with a 1.78 60ft with only an mbc, full interior, spare tire and 1/2 tank of gas. Boost was set @ 16 PSI. I also ran several other 13.7xs and a multitude of 13.8s with that setup.

Launch that thing. It takes about 5k rpm or so.

Taking into consideration your car and modifications your times should be lower across the board. From what I can tell not only does your launch technique need some work so does your shifting. I am not ragging on you but, just trying to let you know that the times are there you just need some practice.

A tune is NOT what you need right now.

Good luck.

i went 14.0, a 1.89 sixty foot with a cai and a gfb bov ...feather the clutch, it was easier to launch the wrx than the STi; for me at least
