Default 98 2.5RS died trying to figure out if motors worth fixing or replacing

My 2.5Rs
102k hard miles. Its always eaten oil / run rich. I used to drag race it, its had nitorus in it.. its back to stock and has just been driven for the past 6 months or so. Its started going through more oil than usual and to be honest ive had so much crap going on lately with switching jobs and so on it was neglected and ran low enough that the oil light came on. The other day I was driving own the highway and the car started to lose power, had a hard time keeping up with traffic and then a hard time staying at 60mph going up hill. Crested the hill, car picked up some speed and then the motor died. There was no smoke that I saw. I coasted to a stop, it wouldnt fire but it would crank, then 25 minutes later while waiting for a tow truck it cranked and fired but made some god aweful squaling sounds that didnt sound belt related. Towed it home and started playing with it today.

Im really just trying to figure out how bad the problem could be, if its worth actually pulling this motor apart and trying to repair the issue, or if its easier to just try to find a used replacement. Money will be the determining factor...

Heres what I know so far:

Oils out of the car, there are specks of metal and some small (but big enough) pieces/shavings of copper/bronze metal which I assume is bearings that I can pull out of hte pan with my finger. The fuel filter needs to be replaced, the plugs are absolutely nasty from the car running rich, and my K&N isnt the cleanest either. Battery is fine, coil is putting out spark, fuel pump is priming.

What its doing:

Car will crank and crank but it wont fire. We checked for spark and it was fine off the coil. We tried to get it running on starting fluid and it wouldnt fire.

I want to pull the oil pan to see how much metals in it but it looks like you have to pull the cross member to get all the bolts? Any suggestions on what to do next? Or what I might want to look at first? I was going to put new plugs and a new fuel filter in it and see if it will turn over. The metal shavings is obviously a problem that needs to be attended to but to me the car not firing is another problem all together unless somethings cracked and its not building compression.

So any suggestions, also any suggestions on where to find a motor that will fit this car? i dont care about power production I just want to be able to stop riding my motorcycle an hour to work and an hour back in the rain lol.

Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me.

-Lou

Sounds like you killed it . An oil light means zero oil pressure . Keep driving it or try to turn it over and you just confirm the kill . Sorry dude I would consider a completly rebuilt motor .

if I do the swap it will be for just a stock replacement. i had always planned on putting a turbo motor in the car if the motor ever died but I just dont have the money to be playing with cars at the momment so I just need it to run until i get something else and can sell it. Any suggestions on where to find a motor other than the usual, donor car or junk yard or does anyone know anyone that might have one or a connection to get one. I think theres a few different model years that will work fine so that might help too.

Also I obviously dont know a ton... do I need a whole motor or would it be just the block or ... whats the best way to find out, just pull it apart and count hte broken pieces? My roomates know more about it than I do so they will help but they arent too familiar with subarus and as we know they are a bit different lol.

dont try to salvage a broken block, you dont know what structual damage was caused to it. OEM lasts longer than rebuilds usually.

just build up a new engine, its funner, and youll know youll be rock solid, and if moneys a problem, buy urself a 300 dollar car and keep that as a project, cuz ur s.o.l, shavings in the pan is just telling you its done.

could have ate a piston.

Check the classifieds here and on rs25.com. I think I've seen more complete motors over on rs25. There's also Ebay - there are always a good half dozen motors on Ebay. Most of them seem to be JDM, but essentially they should be the same thing. Search for "subaru engine" and you'll come up with a number of them.

Also try www.car-part.com . The '97-99 Legacy 2.5GT and '97-99 Outback all used the same Phase I DOHC 2.5L that your 2.5RS has, so there are plenty of engines out there for you. If you plug in a '98 Impreza it'll only bring up a few listings, but if you plug in the Legacy/Outback it'll show a bunch more.

Try www.fsautoparts.com , a dedicated Subaru salvage yard in western CT. They have tons of Subies, should be plenty of donor engines there. I'm not sure if they'll do just a shortblock, but it's worth looking into.

From the sound of it, your heads should be fine. You could look into picking up just a shortblock and putting your good heads on that shortblock. I picked up a Phase II shortblock for $200, local pickup, can't remember if I initially saw it listed here or on rs25.com, but either way, they're out there.

Definately just put a shortblock in with your heads, new headgaskets and seals. You'd be out $600 at the most and a weekend of wrenching. Even though I've never been to SOCAL...I still can't seem to bring myself to ship a motor, otherwise I'd tell you I had 3 or 4 that would suit you well. It's too bad you weren't closer, or I'd make you a deal including installation.

They're out there....Sometimes dealers have a supply of warranty shortblocks that you can pick up for a song. If you talk to the mechanics, you may find one that is usable as is if you're looking to get it running cheap and dump shortly. Sometimes they'll get customers that are overly sensitive to piston slap and demand a replacement even though the motor will still go a long time further.....

Scrounge around, you'll find something suitable.

Something similar happened to me.

I was about to exit the freeway when my engine started making a horrible squealing, definitely not like a belt, just like you describe. It ran horrible, and I limped off of the freeway then I heard a thump and the engine died. It would crank but not start. Got it towed home.

I looked at it, and the RH intake cam was seized in the head - which I assume caused the squealing. So maybe it's just a top end problem. Personally, I don't see how any bottom end stuff could cause that squealing noise.

Whats the point if this retarded comment ? This guy is looking for some help and advice and you chime in with your worthless advice. This guy is in MA an you're in OR you'd be STUPID to buy an east coast car and 1) Pay $1000 to ship it back to Oregon or 2) Pay about the same in gas to drive it back to Oregon .... you freakin' moron. He already said TWICE he's not at a point where he wants to dump ca$h into a swap project, I hope to God you're not a psychoanalyst or a high school counselor because YOU SUCK at listening to people.

Didn't your momma tell you to keep yer dang mouth shut if you can't say anything nice/helpful ?
