Default OT: Another cell phone plan thread

Decided I will finally give Sprint the axe. Not only does the coverage suck as of late, but my last bill, for two lines, was 200 bucks.

So, any suggestions on a good plan? Here are my requirements

2 Lines/shared minutes

Usually use <500 anytime minutes a month so anything over 500 is good.

Free calls between phones/network

Free phones a plus

No internet, pictures, any of that crap. Just a cursed cell phone. Believe me, I would dump it completely but last time I did that I ended up in need of one. Thought about doing a prepaid thing but those cards expire without use, so might as well just have a plan.

Also, anyone know how I can get out of this contract early without paying 150/per phone? Do any companies offer to pay your term fee if you sign up with them? Im usually good at avoiding these charges, I would think being a customer for 7 years and just plain tired of the poor service and fluctuating bills would be reason enough to let me go for free. What if I were to be deployed overseas? Would that get me out of it?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I have a company Nextel but if I had to get service I would do Verizon. They seem to have the best coverage.

Verizon is usually ranked at the top, but Cingular is starting to look pretty good.

How pricey is Verizon?

The only reason I got Cingular is (1) company discount and (2) GSM - World Phones. Phones made for the US Market did not satisfy, ended up getting a UK phone.

verizon is pretty good (for a teleco...heh). I have the same requirements you have (2 phones, minutes, etc) and pay much less.

The only way I know to get out of a cell phone plan is to tell them that you moved to a new location (get junk mail sent to an out of state relative with your name on it...or maybe a magazine subscription). Being deployed overseas might be a good idea (though they'll probably ask to see your orders). Also, knowing someone that work for vz might help.

I can type up some orders, I hate to be that shady though. Karma and all. From what I have heard bitching doesn't get you out of it though, and to be honest I think somoen who has had one carrier for this long is entitled to being let off for free. Especially since I have two contracts to pay fees on!!

From what I have read and talked to people, Sprint doesn't budge from their Early Termination fees. I suppose I could type up some orders but I believe in Karma and next thing you know I may end up being sent there for real

Verizom FTW....I pay $40.00 for 400 min. I think It's 50 for 500 minutes plus $10.00 for every added line. Really not bad. See Katie at The verizon/Audiocrafters store in suffolk. A little hike, but it's a nice saturday/sunday drive, adn I have never been more impressed with a phone store. They went above and beyond the call of duty.

Why was your sprint bill 200 bucks?! sweet jesus.

I have sprint x2, I think it is 70 bucks (maybe less, not sure). Unlimited sprint to sprint obviously (and weekends). Anytime minutes are more than we use, so I don't remember how much.

everyone around here uses something different for the most part. Only complaints I have heard are from sean's previous service, but I forget the company.

I have family share w/ teh gf, 700 shared peak minutes, free nights and weekends, texts, yadda yadda.... last bill was 108/mo. When she's not racking up ringer downloads, that's the standard price... plus, verizon FINALLY cleaned up their phone selection... I have an e815, she's got a 325... Motorola FTW!

go Verizon.

Also, you might be able to switch to Nextel without voiding your contract, and then jump ship from Nextel with a "trial period" thing. I know that's worked for some people, but it's just pretty much luck of the draw.

I disabled my internet, however, while stuffing my phone in my pockets on several occasions I noticed I have activated it. My phone does not have a lock on the internet without using the key lock, which is a PITA.

This is probably the reason for the high bill, because just today my phone was logged on for who knows how long. Meh.

Also I have been getting crazy text messages about downloads I dont have, or never ordered. Have I been h4xored???

Im irritated that they dont seem concerned that the internet was not actually "used", but accidentally switched on. I never make such claims, pay my bill late, none of that. I would think a good company would say "Well, we can adjust your bill"...but no. Not only that, they cannot tell me WHEN the internet charges were made or why I am getting these stupid text messages.

So, their piss poor c ustomer service means I may just suck it up and terminate them. Their reception sucks lately anyway. They were already on thin ice in my book.

ok well that makes sense. I'm pretty sure you could persuade them to take care of it, but that is still unnecessary hassle.

Yeah, the lady on the phone seemed unconcerned. Again, never made a late payment, never had a gripe. True, its technically my error, but why would i have cancelled my internet package a few months ago only to use it for more money now? At the very least I should be able to resign up for the internet with them prorating those charges in exchange.
A friend had the same issues, paying 200/mo with Nextel. He sucked it up, shelled out 400 bucks and went to cingular. With more minutes, his bill is a pretty constant 80/mo. Thats for more minutes than I have now and I figure that savings will pay for itself within the 2 years I have left on this contract.

I've got Verizon and had them for almost 6 years now without a single problem. I get good reception with hardly any dropped calls unless I'm in some crazy dead zone for cell phones (like Dave's dad's neighborhood)

$39.95 for 300 min plus unlimited nights n weekends.

Looking at Verizon, doing a Family share plan you get 2 phones, 700 minutes, unlimited IN calling(between any Verizon phone), nights and weekends for $69.95. With a 2 year plan activation is free and there are alot of phones you can get free with the plan too.

I just switched over to Verizon from Nextel (Nextel blows the big one) and got one of the new music razor phones. I've had the service for two weeks now and have yet to loose reception. I can actually talk in my house without dropping calls now, I love it. My plan is 39.99 for 450 min and unlimited IN calling and nights and weekends. Plus, I get a 15% govt discount so thats pretty sweet.

T-Mobile is what I have. GREAT coverage up here in Frederick.... and Baltimore and DC when I go down there

FamilyTime Basic 700 $59.99
Unlimited night and weekend minutes

I love my T-Mobile phone.
PLUS! T-Mobile pre-paid minutes expire after a year after youput on $100 in cards. So, your minutes are good for a year once you spend a little money

**** verizon... I got double billed every other month and they ****ed my credit

When I moved, I had no service on my block and needed it cause I had no land line. I had to get new service. Verizon said because I had no service, They would cancel me and I would not have to pay. a year later I noticed my credit score go from high 700s to low 600s. Verizon had me at non payment on my cancellation fees WHEN THEY TOLD ME I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY. It took me a year to get that **** off of my ****ing credit report.

I had t-mobile for the past two years and loved it. Cheap as hell too. Service could be better though. 1000 anytime minutes unlimited nights and weekends for like 50 bucks a month.

I'm now switching to Cingular. Coverage is outstanding prices are decent and their phones are pretty good too. That and I'm getting a family plan with my girl. 700 minutes with rollover for 69.99ish and free mobile to mobile FTW.

I'd say Cingular or T-Mobile

Verizon has the most coverage and most reliable network on the east coast. Their customer service is typically rated much better than most competitors (usually ties with T-Mobile).

Verizon has some great phones coming out soon.

All phone networks are digital. I don't know of any carrier that is building or maintaining analog networks... they're inefficient, unsecure, and don't support broadband data services.

I think you may have confused the term "digital" with CDMA. Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular, Alltel, and Cricket all use CDMA network technology (but they operate separate networks). Cingular, T-Mobile, and Cellular One operate GSM networks, which are also digital.

PRL updates tell the phone which default network to use while travelling (prevents roaming charges). Unless you travel to a new market with your phone, a PRL will not enhance your performance.
