Default Gas Needle Broken?

I always thought my car had a 9 gallon gas tank because everytime the needle goes down to empty, when i put gas it stops just before 9 gallons on the gas pump. but then one day i was really empty (needle way below E line) and i put 9.12 gallons and so then i started wondering. and everywhere i check it says i have a 13.2 gallon tank. I drive a 95 Impreza L 1.8L. Is my needel broken or is this normal?

Completely normal. If the needle is on E, you have about 4 gallons left. Waaaay below E is about 1-2 gallons left. Just start keeping tracking with your odometer and you'll figure it out. I used to fill up at 300 miles regardless of where the needle was pointing.

95 Impreza's are notorious for the fuel gauge sender-reader going bad

Just get used to filling up the car, and often

How big is the tank on a '99 RS? Mine seems to only take 9 gallons to fill up as well.

RS tanks should be 14.7 gallons, for a total of a 15.1 gallon system. I have managed to put 14.6 gallons in, but the needle was like 3.5 needle-widths below E. If I stop at E, I typically put about 11.5-12.0 gallons in.

well when the needle gets below the E my car starts driving like its low on gas, is this normal for still having at least 3 gallons in the tank? the one time i let it go way below the line it was driving like i was low on gas and then i filled it up and it was only 9 gallons.

again, your fuel gauge is BROKEN.

you just need to get in the habit of fueling often

or you could take it in, and spend a few $100 to get it fixed.

Except on 98 RSs, we only have 13 gallon tanks.
