Question Rallycross = How hard is it on the car?

Hi Guys,

I was very interested in going to the rallycross event organized by Robin until I got my new car (Protege5... couldn't afford a WRX and couldn't find a decent 2.5RS for sale in Ottawa/Montreal)....

So anyways, I was wondering, how hard is this event on the cars. I know some guys with new WRX's were there so is it real hard on the car or do you feel it doesn't damage the car all that much... Just let me know of your impressions as I could change of idea and go there to test my driving skills that surely need a lot of practice!

Lemme know,

- Phil, a big Subaru fan with a Mazda Protege5 (?!)

Uhhh...... Well, if its at the same track as it was last time, it's HELL on your car! I drove pretty slowly thru the last one, and it rattled the HELL outta my car. PLUS, if I didnt have my skidplate installed, I wouldnt have an engine now!

I assume you dont have skidplates on your Protege. It's pretty bad for your shocks, and it'll create a few more squeeks and rattles. Otherwise my car is A-OK. But its a Scoobie, so its sorta designed for that kinda rough stuff. I would assume a Protege would be more fragile. Check with Robin, maybe its a smoother track.

All I can say is that I'm VERY surprised nothing broke!

Compared to most rally crosses, this one wasn't that bad. Just lots of scratches. Everyone was pretty good about checking the track to get the oil pan killers out of the way.

The rally cross I did in Bancroft this year was certainly more destructive on the car then this one. Oh well, that's what the car is for, so that's what I'm doing with it

Hhhhmmm... seems it's not a good idea, as I thought... oh well!.. Maybe I should take my dad's 91 MPV or my mom's civic... hehe!

Should have bought an Impreza, then I wouldn't have mind and would have got the extra protection (!) for the car!

Oh well, I might head up to see what it's all about and help around with the track...

Thanks all,

-Phil, who now really regrets not buying an Impreza!

Default Well, that's what they're for...

Ok,
I got a few scratches, but I'm working on better mudflaps! Thanks to Gooseman's skidplate, absolutely no undercarriage damage. It's tougher on car than getting groceries, but again, you decide how much you push and how many runs you do! The field was not bad at all and we took good care of dangerous rocks with shovels.

But then again, watching the San Remo rally last night and seeing Marko Martin rolling over his $500k WRX, it's not that tough!

Heck, these things are RALLY CARS! Look at how good Pat Richard's and the Paynters are doing with basically "stock" car...

If I wanted a show car I would have bought an S2000, or an A4...

Exactly!

Yeah, that roll over was pretty painful to watch. Looked a little like Burns roll when he first got the car.

Mind you, those guys don't pay (much?) for replacement parts.
