Suzuki will offer CVTs on its minivehicle fleet
24 July 2006, sources: Japan Automotive Digest and my own eyes
Suzuki, like its rivals, will offer CVTs on its minivehicle fleet (i.e. 660cc) Even though it's already running hard to keep up with demand, Suzuki is preparing to follow the industry by offering high efficiency continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) on its minivehicles, Nikkan Jidosha reported. Rival minivehicle makers Daihatsu and FHI (Subaru) are offering CVTs and using them as a selling point to attract customers at a time of rising fuel prices. FHI uses CVT series it developed together with Van Doorne's Transmissie (Holland) in 1988 for its minivehicles. Currently Subarus available are R1, R2, Pleo and Stella (all 660cc, only in Japan). Daihatsu presented their in-house developed CVT on the Tokyo Motor Show in Oct. 2005, where Suzuki was stunned, as they expected to beat Daihatsu in timing. Daihatsu has already introduced this CVT together with its ultra-fuel efficient new engine in their new Sonica mini and will also introduce it in their Move and Mira minis and the 1 liter boon. Suzuki feels compelled to offer CVTs to counter the marketing offensive of its rivals (in Japan). Though Suzuki has been doing its own R&D on CVTs (they have a history with rubber belt CVTs with the Alto and Wagon R in the nineties), this metal belt CVT will probably come from Fuji AT, the FHI-Jatco(Nissan) joint venture. Suzuki will begin fitting CVTs to its minivehicle lineup, but plans to expand to larger vehicles as well.
