Default Vacuum and "Health"?

Rolling through a few threads on gauges, I've seen a few of them mention a vacuum gauge being a measure for the "health" of your engine.

Is there any substance to this? For real? Snopes material? Controversial as a grounding kit?

I'd love to hear any material regarding this, just for the obscure tech.
