Default Gauging interest/question: AP purchase $500

I've been searching and reading alot, now question time... here's the deal:

A guy in town purchased an accessport from cobb for his 06 wrx, they sent him an AP for an 06 sti. He contacted cobb and they overnighted him the correct one without asking for the sti one back. he said this was cobb's way of saying sorry. My questions are... how much bs is this, and wouldnt the 06 sti model have the wrx maps as well? Or is it model/year specific. Most importantly... this will be my daily driver. It's an 06 STi that is bone stock. I assume i will have to run it stage-1 (comes with both stg-1/2?) until i get a TBE. what's the poll on the OTS cobb map vs. say a PDX tuning map or whatever else is avail out there. I want the best bang for the buck without blowing my engine.

That is NOT Cobb's way of saying sorry. They WILL want that AccessPORT back, so DO NOT get your hope's up. The day will come when they want it back and you will have to pay full price.

thanks for the reply unabomber, been reading your manifestos for years owning an 04 and now 06 STi. My main concern is if the darn think doesnt work, then i am out $500 and in possession of stolen property. Any opinions on the rest of my post?

The STi and WRX AccessPORTS are different and they are specific to the MY as well.
You must run Stage 1 until you get an exhaust.
You could run the PDX map, but I'm not sure how much better it will be for $150 or whatever they charge. Your best bet is to get a protune after you get your AccessPORT. If a protune is not to be had in your area, then try the PDX map or get the StreetTUNER and see if someone or yourself can tune it for you.

thanks... seems like everyone is against the off the shelf cobb map and to get a different map, last thing i want to is blow my engine. Would i need to dynotune the car or just run a few 4th gear WOT runs and check the values? Is stage-1 safer than stage 2? If i remember right back in the days you could yield 30hp with a good TBE setup, they used to use boost controllers and some wastgates needed porting... is that a thing of the past? seems like everyone is going accessPORT or UTEC or EcuTEK

I just reflashed the stage 2 91 octane and i could not be happier w/COBBS OTS Map!!! Throttle response is drastically improved and the car feels like it picked up 25 horsepower easy!

Your Accessport is just fine. Stick with the stage 1(reflash) until you get at the bare minimum of a downpipe. Better to get a whole turboback and then go stage 2. Once the downpipe or turboback is on, go to MZM and get it pro-tuned. You will make more power with less boost(Mohammed is good).

I don't have the AP yet, i was thinking of cobb's DP and the stock catback to keep it quiet (stealthback), restrictive sure... but quiet is the key. And as far as MZM goes, i'll never do business with him, he's very unprofessional and lacks respect.
