Hey all, I am going to Team O'Neil Rally School (4-day Rally School) and I am wondering when is best time to go summer or winter time (with snow)?
I would think winter would be more exciting? Please let me know, thanks.

I've heard that there are less people who go during winter so you get more seat time. But it probably depends on why you are going. If you are going to have fun driving sideways winter will work, but if you are going to get better at driving on gravel, you'll want to go during spring/summer/fall.

Go in the fall....in your span of 4 days you could see both winter and summer....seriously. Weather changes rapidly in that area. Course, hotels are more expensive in october, due to foliage so be watchfull.
Winter can be seriously cold, so be prepared for that if you go then. |

Go during winter. You will learn a lot about car control plus get more seat-time. O'neils sometimes offers a two day winter driving/rally special for Subaru owners for a discounted price.
I took one of these such classes a few years ago. I had already won a few AutoX and Rallyx events, but this course helped me vastly improve my overall driving ability, espically in the snow which is a difficult surface to come to terms with when you are really driving at the limit competatively. |

Seat time really isn't the issue, since they limit the number of students per class. I think that number is 6. This is to maximize seat time and have a balance of students for the types of things they will be teaching and the way they teach it.
Largest factor to seat time is whether or not your partner is a seat hog. They attempt to always run full classes and may cancel if they don't get the required number. Their classes fill fast, so check their schedule. |

If the snowbanks are big, then you won't feel as bad if you stuff it. Or maybe I am the only one who would feel bad about wadding up other peoples cars. ;-)
Winter driving is slower. Less traction. You have to be more patient. Easier to get into a drift. More time to enjoy it. Less dust. Less bugs. Summer gravel is faster. Everything will happen faster. If you want things to happen quickly go in the summer. Most of all, enjoy it! Either surface should be a BLAST! Ted Mendham |

I've been up 3 times in 3 seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall. The weather never cooperated; Low snow in winter, snow in spring not much gravel, and way too much rain in fall. Go anytime and have a blast. Also, I highly encourage you do 2 or 3 days wait a quarter or two, then go back for 2 or 3 days; it will compound and reinforce your learning curve. And give your left foot recovery time from al that braking... Good luck and enjoy the 'full monty' |
