Default starbucks iced chai = cup full of sugar

so i switched from a large iced/cream&sugar from DD's to a large iced black tea with milk and a little sugar at starbucks. it's actually cheaper and doesn't plow through me the way a large coffee does. this morning i decided to check out an iced chai. not only was it $1.50 more expensive, it is SICKENINGLY sweet. ugh. that is all.

I drink an earl grey with cream no sugar every morning and afternoon for about 10 years. I find it to be tasty and healthy since it has 0 sugar in it. I don't understand why anyone would drink coffee it tastes like ****.

It's the American way. Starbucks doesn't serve coffee, they serve coffee flavored non-carbonated soft drinks. Try getting a regular (black) coffee from starbucks. They always make it bitter. My guess is because it doesn't matter how it is brewed because 98% of the people who go there load it up with sugar and cream.

<--- Drinks black coffee
<--- Drinks all teas (except for chai) with no cream and just a touch of sugar (prefer equal if it's available)

Thai iced tea is the best. It is almost pure sugar.

strangely, i totally agree. the tea itself isn't so bad. but the fact that they dump a quarter cup of sweetened condensed milk on top of it makes it pretty much a diabetic's worst nightmare.

and it is delicious.

<-- used to work at a thai restaurant

(thai iced coffee is similarly amazing)

I got starbucks once and was not impressed.

Neither was the clerk who got mad when I asked for a "regular, cream only".

I mean latte.

I hate saying Tall, Grande and Venti when ordering, just sounds so pretentious. Small medium or large please.

I like the Shaken Iced Tea Lemonade with the passion tea, myself. Yummy.

But, we like Caribou Coffee better, overall. Rich says their coffee is better than Starbucks and I like their foou-foou drinks better.

Agreed. Caaribou has better coffee. *$'s makes milkshakes, not coffee.

Note: A Venti Mocha from *$'s with "healthy" lowfat milk has 446 calories and 20 grams of fat (source here )

A Chocolate triple-thick shake from McD's has 440 calories, but only 10 grams of fat. (source )

Which one would most people think is better for you?

We really don't care what you call it. If people ask our sizes, I say small, medium, large or 12,16, and 20 oz. The only people that have to say it are the employees. I don't see why it's such a big thing. It's not just Starbucks, most coffee houses do the short-tall-grande thing.

I like the chai, but it IS really sweet if you get the full amount. In an iced chai, what you get is about a 50/50 mix of milk and chai concentrate versus 1/4 chai and the rest milk (and water, which i never add) in the hot chai. I get them with soy and only 2 pumps of chai. I get that if I had to skip breakfast, or my usual black tea lemonade with only 1 pump of classic. Either our drinks are getting progressively sweeter, or I'm losing my sweet tooth.

Probably the mocha, since your calories would be coming from actual milk? They're probably including whipped cream in that count. Espresso has 0 calories, the mocha syrup is semi-sweet and there's definitely not that many calories from fat coming from it, and i don't know what lowfat is pertaining to. 2%? nonfat? Keep in mind a venti is 20 oz, about 18 of which are milk. 18 oz. is a lot bigger than a serving size.

A LARGE skim mocha with no whip is 290 calories with 25 calories from fat. Your numbers are closer to whole milk with whipped cream.

Much of the fat other than the whip cream comes from the chocolate.

I'm also a big fan of Caribou. I basically treat any of their fancy coffee-esque drinks as desert.

One of those turtle mochas is like drinking a chocolate cake.

2.5g of fat in a venti nonfat mocha with no whip. That's not much, and definitely not 20. A 20 oz. cup of just steamed milk has 1g of fat and 214 calories.

Drinking 20 oz. of milk in one sitting is still excessive, but let's be realistic, there's no way a McDonald's milkshake is healthier.
