Thumbs down Rear Wheel Bearing Failure

Anyone else experience wheel bearing problems on their RS? I had the left rear fail at 20,000 miles and just had another left rear bearing fail at 26,000.

Left rear. Same as Drivers side? I am having a rubbing problem with my drivers rear tire. Could this contribute? What were your symptoms?

Thumbs down

My car is a 99, with stock wheels and tires on the first failure. The second failure I was running studded snow tires.

At first I just thought if was tires were getting noisier as the got older. Noise starts out low.. As time goes by it slowly gets louder, more of a rumbling sound. Then all of a sudden you notice a more of a grinding sound, especially when going around corners.

On this last failure; I think my snow tires were hiding the sound longer. Coming back from Stevens Pass on Saturday, I thought I must be tired of listening to these snow tires, it sounded like a truck. Then I noticed on a few low speed turns the grinding sound.....at this point I took it in and my suspisions were confirmed.

The failures on wheelbearings have been more common than Subaru would like to see.Repeat failures have been nonexistent if properly repacked. The Imprezza design has very little tolerance and if over torqued will fail again.
