Question Ask the experts, volume 14

Its time to add a few extra Gauges or pods to the vehicle and I am in need of major guidance!

I see that there are really 3 styles of pods available…pillar mounted like what 06wrx has, the steering column type that is offered by the dealerships and the classic Triple meter pod where the clock is/was.

The main gauges that I will be looking for would be oil temp and boost mostly…Pricing seems to be ALL over the map! I’m confused, I have no starting point, I need help!

I do know what I don’t want…the pod must NOT squeak or rattle , must not look cheap and must blend into the existing dash with same color of lights etc…

What are you guys using? Suggestions, comments, pointers would be great…

Thank you

Matt

If you want the perfect match then see if you can find Omori gauges. They make the STi cluster so the face and lighting are identical. However, they quit selling to NA and are mighty pricey. The next top pick for matching are the DEFI gauges (amber colour) but that rrquires the Defi link system and will cost $$$.

The "budget" option are Autometer and the red rubber bit on the bulb. You won't match your stock cluster, but the light colour will be close, they're accurate and cheap.

My suggestion for the 3rd gauge is an EGT as spikes in EGT are a poor man's way of knowing if you're running lean. As well, if something bad happens your EGT will usually spike well before your oil temp.

If you're not married to the idea of analogue gauges you could get a DTEC and custom up a mounting like Wombat.

Have a look at www.daddysscp.com They have guages that are a excellent match for the STi and don't cost a bundle. I have Auto meter and they are the budget option if you want cheap guages that look cheap autometer is the way to go. I have never been happy with my setup. One day I might change it.

And Jitenshakun 2006 STi???? You just messing with us.

I wouldn't suggest the column type if you hate squeaks.

also if you only wanted to go with two guages autometer makes a 2 guages version on the pillar pod and you can get it painted.... ^^^ my pillar doesnt squeek so i dont know what your trying to say there cuz mine makes no noise.

Personally i had the clock set up and didnt like the fact that I had no clock any more.

Another option for color match is the mad dad guages they do a decent job of color match at a decent price and they do the black out like your stock guages.

DEFI have a matching start up sweep like your stock guages too but they cost the money.

I still havent found guages I like but I will keep looking mind you i personally dont care if they match my dash becasue I want a blue dash anyways.

The 2 surrounding the instrument cluster is the closest to stock-looking.
I made some adjustments to mine to make it look factory:
Light sanding of entire surface
Filled in the 2 little holes with bondo + sanded smooth
Primed with flexible plastic paint
Painted with flexible black paint

People think it's OEM as the fit is PERFECT and it doesn't squeak or rattle.
