Default 98 Legacy GT Turbo Swap I/M Problems

I have 98' Leg GT that I want to swap in a turbo motor, but have ran into an emmisions testing brick wall. Our IM laws (Alaska) state that if you swap in another motor, it has to be from the same model, and same year or newer. Ideally this would be the Legacy GT 2.5, but have read it is a nightmare with all the other features that the ECU runs (ie. climate control) Would I be able to run a EJ20 or EJ257 with the IM people not knowing its not a 2.5 from a newer Legacy GT? I also have the EJ22T option, but it is not OBDII. Can you run the EJ22T with a newer ECU? THanks for help

EJ257 is your best bet. there is no way for them to know its not from a legacy. shortblock is the same from it, the forrester, STi, and now WRX. your car is OBDII and would have to be "read" as such. if you put older engines in there, you may be missing certain readings using your ECU with an OBDI engine. im not sure tho. but it's an older engine, and dated technology. plus the EJ257 is way more readily avail.!
