So in my effort to save $50 on crossbars, I bought some 3/4" galvanized pipe from Home Depot and had them cut it for me. After a week of rain, I had fair weather for painting last weekend. I cleaned the pipes pretty well, let them dry, and then followed Rustoleum's instructions of using their Aluminum Primer. I followed this with 4 coats of Rustoleum spray on bed liner. I waited another 4 days for it to cure (Rustoleum suggests only 3 days.)

I attached these to my car last night with the Yakima Rail Grab set that I purchased. Everything was tight and sturdy, so I went for a drive. Anything above 40 mph, the wind noise is terribly loud. I am definitely going to need a fairing.

I took the cross bars off when I got home because I can't drive around with that noise. It turns out that the Rustoleum spray on bedliner is crap.

Where the Rail Grab things tighten up against the bar to hold it in place, the bed liner shattered and came off. I would expect it to be a little more durable.

I'm going to attempt to redo these sections with either 3M or Duplicolor rubberized undercoating, or maybe PlastiDip. Any thoughts?

Pay the 50 bucks?

Also galvanized pipe doesn't hold paint well unless it's been weathered for like a year or acid etched.

Just noticed today that I lost the end cap from my factory 06 aero bars (the piece of the crossbar where the key inserts).

Anyone know how much this part costs to replace and where to order it?

anyone else done the mods to the yakima racks to have the feet mount to where the rain gutters on the sedans are? i posted a couple pages back. looks "cleaner" to me as the arent arpped over the sides of the car.

here:
finally found the link i was talking about. to modify the yakima racks so they dont scratch up your paint where the feet sit. they bolt down to the bolt under the rain gutters on the roof. definately going to modify mine like this, as the roof of my RS was trashed after a few road trips.

This car is badass. I love the no-parking sign underneath.

Does anyone have custom brackets for there Thule fairing? With the stock brackets the fairing moves a lot and starts making a horrible noise at speed.

Did you install them correctly? Mine don't budge... Try putting the middle two in the second setting so it arcs a little across the roof.

I followed all the instructions, but it seem's to shake violently above 80 mph. I think if I move the fairing more toward the windshield and slope it down it will help. But the brackets just seem so flimsy.

They are flimsy but the downforce of you driving is supposed to do all the work.

Put the outer two clips on the inner setting and the inside two clips on the outer setting. Then angle the outer two downward and even separate toward the outside if you need to get it to still sit right.

yeah and i really hate that they are a loadbearing part of the design. had to order another pair. I'm beginning to think the frontloader is a better, albeit less theft-proof, design.
