I just went OEM rack and board holders. I got the OEM rack from craigslist for $35 and the snowboard holders from craigslist for $50 and ordered the clamps to fit the OEM rack for $30. I wouldn't buy new...racks are kind of like motorcycles (at least where I live)....people buy them new, realize they don't use them very much, and sell them cheap just to clear space in the garage.

Just bought a 03 WRX with 50k miles, my babe needs a nice rack now. What do you guys think?

Whats the best brand and style for our cars? I am looking for one that isn't raised to high off the roof and also want the wind fairing. I do a lot of sports that require equipment ex: surfing, wake boarding, snowboarding, BMX, etc.. looking for one that could fit most of my needs.

I've seen someone on here had one he had to drill in, do they all need to do that?

Thanks guys!

I got a great plastic surgeon in SoCal if you're local.

As for the car, I'm personally a Yakima fan, and no, you don't need to drill into the roof. However, for a cleaner look, I believe you do on the earlier models. not sure. The 08+ have factory installed mounting points in the tracks that can be used. Not sure if your 03 does.

I think for your car, with the Yakima gear, you'd need a set of Q-towers with Q-clips, round bars and then whatever racks you need for all your gear. Be prepared to drop some $$$$$ though. Unless you go used, I bet you will be close to $7-800 bucks for everything.

Got these for myself for Christmas. Finally put them on this morning. I also have a Subaru Yakima Buttondown 6 ski, 4 snowboard rack coming in the mail. Hoping to get that sometime next week, before I go riding so i dont have to take my dads truck anymore!

And this is the rack i bought. Got it for $50 used on ebay.

Throwing my hat in the ring with ****ty iphoneography snaps including a fancy Instagram. 2 week old '13 hatch with her first "mod" - factory bars and a coffin up top

Having been through Thule racks/ski carriers/bike trays and Yakima racks, I am so incredibly stoked on the OEM bars for a couple reasons:

1. They go on so easy. No measuring, no clamping, none of that bs. 10 minutes and I am done.
2. I am getting phenomenal MPG -- obviously this is relative. But, on my '05 with either Thule or Yakima bars I was getting 18mpg on the reg. I'm holding steady at 22.8mpg on the new rig with mixed driving around DC and managed to squeak out 27mpg on the PA turnpike last week on the way back from 7 Springs...until I exited the highway of course. I think this is two fold 1) the measuring I mentioned before. If the bars aren't perfectly square, my hunch is they are more like a sail and lose the majority of aerodynamics. 2) along the same lines thats a huge ass box (thats what he said?) and when not square with the bars and ultimately the car it amplifies the sail-effect.
3. They look way better than the Thule/Yakima options
4. No clamping = no scratches

I'll snap some better pics at some point in the near future, but for now...

So, I added an Inno faring to my OEM crossbars and 2 Yakima Frontloaders. It did not reduce wind noise at all. It almost seems louder. That's a bit of a let down.

I have a 99 wagon and cannot seem to find brackets large enough for my OEM roofrack bars. I've tried two different Mighty Mount sizes to no avail (23H and i think 32H). My bars are skinny but really wide. The width simply seems too big for any brackets I'm seeing online. I got my Yakima basket like three months ago and I'm at the point where I'm about to just fabricate brackets just so I can mount my basket. Help.

yeah, WTF. It looks great and all, but I swear I read multiple instances in which folks said it quieted things down. I already pulled the Inno log off and everything. Guess i'm keeping it.

Stupid question:

What's the purpose of a fairing? Is it to quiet down wind noise? Is a fairing used when carrying a specific type of load on the roof (like bikes, or skis, or a cargo basket)?

The reason I'm asking is because I install a Yakima SkyBox on Thule square cross bars, and that setup is perfectly quiet. I don't hear anything unusual, even at highway speeds.
