I know nothing about using roof racks...Are the OEM roof racks w/ attachments good or what aftermarket ones are there?
I'm thinking of getting 2 kayaks and maybe sometimes hauling 2 mountain bikes at separate times.

I am using OEM crossbars and Inno mounts for my bikes. Only problem I have is my crossbars are becoming annoying with their constant creaking when they flex. Probably will upgrade to a more solid crossbar in the future.

so far it looks like the oem cross bars sit the lowest to the roof, which is what im looking for (unless anyone can point me to another set that sits as low). i think im leaning towards a yakima basket. im assuming its relatively easy to attach the fairing at a lower setting closer to the roof?

Keep in mind that the 3rd gen OEM bars have a max load of about 170lb.

And thats not underrated, I pulled my front bar through the sunroof after I first got it installed and the whole thing flexed in, I only weigh about 165. 200lb would probably break it

I'm completely daunted by of all of the roof rack options for these cars. Are there any mounting systems out there that don't contact the painted surface of the roof at all? Or is that just not feasible? I'm just really paranoid about damaging the paint on the roof--I know I can use some vinyl to protect the roof though. I was just curious...

I would not go OEM. I had them on my 09 with 2 mountain bikes and they flexed an insane amount.

Any suggestions on something that sits as low and is stronger then?

Yakima Roof Racks come with rubber pads that protect the paint on the roof from getting scratched. 100% harm free.

Does anyone happen to know what size hardware the oem mounting points on an 11+ wrx require? I have a set of bars I am looking to throw on the car, but I don't have any of the hardware.

You might have to get what you're missing from the dealer.

Anybody messing around with paint or plasti dip on their rack? My bike mounts are showing age and sun exposure. The painted parts are mostly dull and dirty but the plastic has started really greying. I was contemplating doing some color matched highlights but was looking for some inspiration.

I have OEM crossbars on my '13 and with two medium sized (25-28 lb) mtn bikes, they also flex quite a bit. Bikes haven't fallen off yet, but it wobbles enough to make you keep an eye on it when you go over bumps. Also, you can't lock the OEM towers to your car like Yakima & Thule. I like that it's aerodynamic though.

The thule whispbars are what i think a lot of you guys are looking for, i'm also thinking about switching over from the oem ones myself. They sit roughly a half inch lower than the oem's, locks going onto the car itself, and i believe they're rated for over 200lbs. I believe you need an additional fit kit to work with the factory presets in the roof. They are pretty nice though.

Just bought my oem crossbars for my 13 hatch! I'm really digging the bike racks with the front tire off. I just gotta figure out what one I want now for me n my gfs mtn bikes.

This is why I won't go OEM with my STI. With the WRX it flexed enough for me to check mirrors. With the STI I'm investing.

That said, the mounting point do lock to the car. It's a hex lock so nothing special if they really want it, but still there.

The main things that helped me decide was,
1. I hate constantly taking on and off my wheel if I don't need to
2. If my bikes are covered in mud/dirt/whatever I have to put the wheel somewhere with that style rack.
3. Thats now that tiny less space in the car because I now have a wheel/wheels in the way.

Just got a loadwarrior for a cross country trip in November. I know the double faring is counterproductive. I just didn't take the time to remove it yet.

Anyone know what bike racks work with the oem cross bars? I have a 2013 wrx hatch. I bought a thule 516 " I think it was" and it didn't fit so I had to return it
