2002 WRX Wagon or 2004 WRX Wagon

So I'm looking at WRX wagons. I'd like to get something that would be easier to haul our dog around in (Newfoundland). Plus my wife is trying to get me to get another dog (Daneador - Great Dane/Lab Mix). So we'd have 2 giants roaming around. Needless to say, the 6s just isn't big enough.

So I found a 2002 WRX Wagon with 50k miles, manual, silver for $15,999 and a 2004 WRX Wagon 72k miles, manual silver for $13,999. I really like the inside of the '04 better. The exterior is nice on the '04 too. Though the "bug eyes" on the '02 don't bother me. Plus the price on the '04 is about $3k less than NADA (f* KBB).

My question is which would you go for? I drive ALOT. My 6s is about 1.5 yrs old and has about 24k on it now. So I'll easily turn 100k on the one with 72k. How's reliability on these cars after 100k? Anything I should watch for? I plan on driving this until it dies. I will likely do some small mods to it (I can't leave any car I own alone), but nothing extreme.

Thoughts?

The only reason I got a 04 over a 03 is they didn't have a black 03. i'll swap front ends later down the road.

go with a fxt (forester wagon) if possible. the wrx will be small for the dogs.

Looks like the '04 Wagon may be sold today. Someone dropped a deposit on it. Good thing I called again right as I was leaving (60 mile trip!). The sales guy is going to call me if it doesn't go through.

So I guess I'll keep browsing.

I would go for the 04 over the 02. personally I like the looks of the 02, but there are so many TSB's on the 02 that need to be made into recalls! my 02 has almost 115K on it and no issues so far. still drives like it is brand new! These things last way longer than 100k

Get the '04, an AccessPort, gutted UP, shorty DP, and a very conservative ProTune (one that limits your max boost to <14psi), and that thing will run forever.

buy a modded wagon off the forums if you want to mod down the road. It can save you some money on parts....

but buying a used car is always a big iffy

02 = headlight options

those sound like dealership prices (with the 999) - I would be careful with the 04 - there's probably a reason they are asking way under market value... if you decide to get the 04, make sure you get the engine looked over thoroughly by an independant mechanic - compression check, look for evidence of mods and accidents, etc.

interior-wise, the only difference should be the slightly darker silver trim.

Ahh so there are more than just cosmetic difference? I wasn't really paying attention to those.

doh - forgot about the seats! The 02/03 seats are far superior in terms of comfort/bolstering than the 04+ ones... the 04 seats look cool, but that's about it. (they probably have a better side airbag design, though)

This is what a full blooded Dane looks like in an '02 . . . she has pleanty of room to get up, stretch, and move around.

With both seats down, she has taken to laying sideways with her chin on my shoulder.
