Price of junkyard motors are out of control!

I just got my 98 Legacy GT wagon for $250, but it has a severe lower end knock, more like a BANG. Anyway, I call around figuring I'll get a used motor for around $500 and get prices of $2000-$2500 for a used motor.

That is insane for a junkyard motor. I finally found a junkyard down the street that had an outback with 85k and had a severe accident. They originally wanted $600, but both heads were questionable so I got it for $400. I was planning on doing headgaskets anyway so I'll just use my old heads on the new block. So hopefully this was a score.

I don't believe it was, especialy if you're going to have to get it worked on. Nippon motors is a good place to start looking for a reliable used motor.

I hope the motor you just got works for you

search in the classifieds on here, i got mine for 700 with 59k delivered to my door complete from oil pan to TB and harness too.

I routinely see EJ25s on ebay for about $1000, complete and (theoretically at least) running.

And as 83Rabbit says, I've seen them even cheaper than that on the classifieds here or rs25.com.

Oh, and what's up with a '98 GT wagon for $250?!

Did it catch fire or something?

A woman owned it and blew the lower end. It was a friend of a friend deal. I told her I only wanted to spend $200 and she wanted $300. I didn't know at the time it was a GT. I figured for the price it was an L. When I found out it was GT wagon with a 5 speed, I could hardly wait to get it.

I looked for over a month in the want ads, craigslist and ebay. It seems in New England that's what they go for. I almost bought a Forester with a bad tranny just for the motor.

yup same thing with the junkyards here. all of the employees are tools and think they can walk all over you. dont take ANY **** from them. if you know how to talk you can get them down to a decent price. if you feel uncomfortable about the price AT ALL then walk away. dont give those sleezebags any more money than what you think its worth.

Thats odd, even the Subaru recycler here (which specializes in subaru parts and is kind of expensive) sells EJ25's for ~$1k
