Question So how strong is the STi 6 speed tranny supposed to be?

Supposedly, the 5 speeds on the WRX are weak after you start modding the car out...If you want to go past 300, it's recommended by some you get a transmission conversion to the STi 6 speed. A few days ago a friend told me the STi 6 speed transmission was weak too, so everyone that raced and modded STi's bought stronger 5 speeds (not the ones from the "regular" WRX). I think that's BS though.

Im running 13.5 in the 1/4 mile and have drag raced and autocrossed many times.

my tranny is fine.

Others are running 12s in the 1/4 mile and have drag raced them, another guy is pushing well over 300hp and autocrosses his and rally crosses his all the time.

all these trannies are fine.

there is no data to suggest yet that the new WRX tranny will fail due to power...

I would imagine doing things like clutch dumping might destroy the tranny. The tranny may survive stock, but a lot more HP and torque would probably destroy it faster if not the first time.

I believe Prodrive said the new 6-speed is good to about 350ft/lbs. of torque. That could easily be well over 400hp. It's vastly stronger because the entire thing was redesigned. Yes, lot's of racers use 5-speed dog boxes, then again, there aren't any true dog replacements yet for the six speed (the zero sports six speed gives up _reverse_, and is for the old tranny anyway).

Clutch dumping and drag launches will kill most AWD trannies. Unless you just want to wow your friends with your 1.7 60' times, aim for 1/4mi trap speeds instead, and ease into the launch. They are more indicative of street performance anyway. I had a FWD sentra with a CA18DET in it that ran 14.7's...it also had a 98.3mph trap...faster than my WRX which ran a 13.79 (I've been to the track twice). The point is, if you optimize for trap speed, you will probably be alot happier...and so will your tranny .

Another thing to think about is time. No one has had the car a year yet, so we can't really say anything about reliablility here. Also, Al blew his first gear synchro a while ago.

If we could only get the STI tranny price WAY down (from $6-8K).........

chris flemming, the guy who autocrosses, rally crosses, and has a 2.5liter engine, bigger turbo etc, he has had his tranny apart, to check on it. no signs of unusual wear.

Scooby Dooby,

Here is a link where they talk about the STI comming to the states. It is only a rumor and no one knows for sure. When it is time you will know.
