Default Ft McMurray peeps.

Hey all,

It seems as though the Union may be sending me up to your neck of the woods. I've never been up there and I am wondering how the hotel situation is? Is it worth it for me to get LOA? or should I try to get an in camp gig??

Thanx,

Chris

I have a couple of friends up there. They always seem to try to get LOA because they said they can usually save quite a bit of that money.

LOA= Live out allowance. If you aren't in camp and are finding your own lodging most jobs will pay LOA. I think it varys from 110-150 or so per day tax free, depending on the company.

Chris
IIRC when the company claims it as an expense you owe tax on it. If they don't claim it as an expense its tax free.

what kind of work do you all do?

I may be coming to Alberta Sept 2, wanna look for a job while I'm there any good paying jobs in Fort Mac... I have 4 friends that just moved there over the last month or so.
They all say there is lots of work and no problem to find a half decent paying job, until you find what you are looking for.

sorry for the hijack...

Unfortunately no. I can fly and not put the miles on my car. So, I ride the Suby shotgun train when I'm up there.

PS - I am a SAGD water treatment engineer.

Check Fortmcmurraytoday.com and see what you can find housing wise.

Are any of you guys bringing your cars up?

If so we can usually get a small meet together within a couple days. Even if not you can ride along with one of us and check out the few of us(that actually know our cars have a turbo) and our cars.

As far as camps or in town go. If you stay in town there is always a bus that you can catch out to your site. If you stay at a camp, depending on where be prepared for lots of drugs and alcohol.

This isn't a bad city and definatly get ahold of us when you are up here, we haven't had a meet/cruise in a while, we are about due.

what plant site are you going to be working on?

im at albian sands right now, this camp in really nice, i would take it over LOA. its just so much easier.

cnrl camps arent all that nice, LOA would be the way to go if you can deal with the drive every day.

if your going to stay in ft. mac for a short time i would recomend the twin pine motor inn, its cheap(80 somethin a night) and clean... fairly clean... much better than the mcmurray inn. best bet is to rent a room in a house. not to hard to find. just my input...
