Default 1994 impreza 5spd manual 2WD, transmission issues questions

i just bought this car, the car is in good shape however the transmission wont shift in to any gear, now car starts, runs clutch works, with motor on or off you cant put it in to any gear its like its stuck in neutral, any clues as to what could cause this, (i would think if transmission went out it would shift in to gears or at least with the clutch out the motor would not start and run as if nothings wrong, the old owner told me it lost 3rd then 4th wouldent shift in to those gears then lost the rest, well wouldetn shift in to them, i'm thinking somthings wrong with the linkage, but i may be wrong my first subaru, any info would be grately apriciated, also if you know where i can find a transmission for this car in northern cali around sacremento area, that would be grately apriciated also. thanks again
Jonathan
