Default Resonator question

So I started to do some research on resonators.. because, well.. I don't really know how they work. I found this on wikipedia and laughed quite a bit:

>>>>>
A resonator is one part in exhaust systems that works with the muffler to reduce noise, by making sound waves "cancel each other out"[1]. The "exhaust note" is an important feature for many vehicle owners, so both the original manufacturers and the after-market suppliers use the resonator to enhance the sound in some way - for example, so-called "Ricers" are notorious for using resonators which aim to give an exhaust note comparable to that of a V8.
<<<<<

Anyway, I guess I may as well ask my noob question.. if I want to add a resonator to mellow out the sound of my EL headers do it just get one welded into my midpipe (which by the way is a custom 2.25" pipe)? Is this something that a muffler shop would just have in stock?

Would it be cheaper/beneficial to just have the 06 WRX midpipe I have in my garage altered to fit my car?

Thanks for any help!

Yeah they usually have them in stock for different sizes. Otherwise you can buy one cheaper at autozone for example ("glasspack"), but then the muffler shop might charge you more for welding since you didn't buy the part from them.

The main difference is that firstly, there is no sound-absorbing fiberglass or steel wool in a Resonator. And secondly, their main method of silencing is the reflective principle, not absorption. An easy way to tell the difference between a glasspack and a true Resonator is to "ping" one with your finger. A glasspack will make a dull thud, and a true Resonator will make a clear "ping!" sound. Yes i said ping!

I have OBX EL headers with the track pipe to a custom 2.25" midpipe currently going to an 06 WRX axleback. I just bought an STI axleback though, so that will be going on soon. I want a resonator to mellow out the sound from the EL headers.
