Question sounds like supercharger whine

Hi, i'm brand new to this forum. I have done a search on this site, but didn't come up with anything useful. Here's the story:

The car: My friend's '97 Impreza Outback Sport with 106K.

When I rev past about 4.5K the engine makes a sound that sounds almost like a supercharger whine. The owner never gets the revs past 4, so she never hears it. Her mom's 2003 Legacy Outback does the same thing...what is that sound??? Both cars are stock and both have manual transmissions.

I consider myself to be somewhat car saavy, but I don't own a subaru so maybe I don't understand something.

Any thoughts?

Seriously though...if it's a wistle, there might be a leaky connection on the intake tubing somewhere. I'd check the the tubing itself, along with the vaccum lines just to make sure.

But, are you sure it's not just transmission noise?

I have the same exact problem. Took it to Meineke and they found no leak. Now that Perdue mentioned it, it does sound like it's coming from the engine bay and not underneath the car.

I know with my 99 TS with the stock exhaust i had that wistle. It was caused by the muffler itself. People have said that they had the same problem even when they installed a WRX muffler on their cars.

Something to do with N/A cars and the way the air goes thru the muffler.

Mr car made a whining sound when the intake was still stock. I have an 01RS.

Seemed like it was the intake design. It still makes a slight sound even with a Ganzflow.

For me it seemed as though it was the stock muffler my leg and my bros both made the "whistle" its normal, and can get annoying after a while

Have you checked to make sure you don't have a supercharger installed?

It's just the powersteering pump, nothing to worry about though. I've heard it on every sube I've owned, some louder than others.

I know! I like to drive that car hard when I get a chance.. but it's not mine and i only get to drive it occasionally.

Well, thanks for the responses everyone, sounds like it's a normal issue and not a cause for concern.
