Default NY Times review of Acura RSX Type-S turns into favorable WRX review

Today's NY Times carried a review of the Acura RSX Type-S and begins:
This is the moment for high-tech Japanese hot rods at
bargain prices. First, Subaru introduced the WRX, a smoking
fast, turbocharged version of its all- wheel-drive Impreza
compact. Now the Acura division of Honda has come through
with the RSX, a muscular front-drive coupe. Better yet,
there is a more powerful, better handling variant called
the Type-S.
So before the reviewer has even mentioned the Acura, the WRX has received a good plug. But the reviewer really gets reved up for the WRX at the end of the review:
Perhaps the best comparison is with the aforementioned
$26,000 (sic) Subaru WRX, an equally odd-looking muscle car -
check out the fog lights, which must be the largest in the
universe - in a small package. The Acura and Subaru have
very different personalities, though. While the Type-S is a
study in sports car refinement, the WRX is a raucous,
modestly appointed compact that earned its stripes on the
rally-car circuit.

Thanks to its 227-horsepower turbocharged engine, the WRX
is a lot quicker on the straightaways (just 5.7 seconds to
60 m.p.h.). The lag that is characteristic of many turbo
engines - a pause before the turbocharger kicks in at low
engine speeds - is almost nonexistent. The brakes, often a
weak link in tricked-out versions of family cars, are
outstanding. And the springs of the WRX have a lot more
room to move up and down than those of the Type-S, giving
the WRX a more comfortable (if somewhat busier) ride on
irregular pavement.

But the WRX's chief advantage is all- wheel-drive, a big
plus in foul weather. And like other Imprezas, it can be
had as a four- door sedan or as a small wagon.

The choice boils down to this: The Acura RSX Type-S is an
elegant mix of style, technology and performance at an
impressively low price. The WRX is a hairy-chested
variation of an off-the-shelf economy car. Can't make up
your mind? At these prices, maybe the solution is to get
one of each.
I still can't believe the WRX got so much good ink in an Acura review.

I wonder how the Acuar/Honda crowd felt after reading the review.

That review is like the old joke:

"I went to see a fight, and a hockey game broke out."

Hey, that reviewer got it all wrong! I know from reading this board that the brakes suck, and are a conspiracy by Subaru to kill us all. The turbo lag is horrific, around Lotus Esprit Turbo kick-in times. Clearly that guy was crazy, or paid off by Subaru. Oh yeah, and the suspension sucks. Change it immediately.

Talking Snowphun....

If you reallyreallyreallyreally wanna get rid of that [crappy] WRX of yours, I'd be very VERY happy to take it off of your hands. Heck, how 'bout a straight-up trade for my MY00 RS Coupe?

ps - I'd never give my baby away - even for a WRX!

Thumbs up

I wonder if these people whining about the brakes have ever driven a Tercel? Or a 70's vintage Nova? Or an air-cooled volkswagen?

Yeah, those WRX brakes just SUCK!

A Tercel would kick your WRX's a$$! Oh wait, that's a Corolla. Sorry, wrong thread.
